CASE STUDY: NONPARAMETRIC STATISTICS TEMPLATE
Instructions: To successfully complete this case study, all of the following instructions must be
adhered to. Only paste tables/figures that contain pertinent information. Only paste tables/
figures where you are instructed to do so. HIGHLIGHT (in yellow) only relevant the data from
tables; as well as your response to each question. In the write-up section, all information must be
provided in paragraph format. When statistical values are discussed, the numerical value must be
given and a reference must be made to the table(s)/figure(s) where the value(s) can be found. An
example of this is “heart rate was statistically greater during running versus cycling (189 vs. 143
bpm) as indicated in Table 1.

The research question for this data set was, “Did the temperature of the environment cause
the group’s core temperature to be ranked significantly different (smallest number = coldest
core temperature ranking, largest number = hottest core temperature ranking)?” The mean
and standard deviation for the core temperature ranking was 10.50 and 5.92 respectively. The
mean and standard deviation for the environmental conditions was 1.50 and 0.52
respectively. The mean rank for the cold environment was 7.90 and 13.10 for the hot
environment. The Mann-Whitney U value was 24 and the analysis was statistically
significant because the sig 2-tailed value was less 0.05 at p = 0.049. The findings of this data
set suggested that the temperature of the environment had a significant effect on the core

temperature rankings. These findings made sense in the real world because the environment
you are in will affect your core temperature and how you feel. This is directly showed in the
data with lower scores in the cold environment and higher scores in the hot environment.

The research question for this data set was, “Is there a statistical difference between the
rankings of the core temperatures of the groups exposed to either a cold, neutral, or hot
environment (smaller number= coldest core temperature ranking, largest number= hottest
core temperature ranking)?” The mean and standard deviation for the ranking core temp
group was 8.0 and 4.47 respectively. The mean and standard deviation for the environmental
temperature group was 2.0 and 0.85 respectively. The mean rank for the cold environment
was 3.0, 8.0 for the neutral environment and 13.0 for the hot environment. The analysis was
statistically significant because the sig value was less than 0.05 at p = 0.002. The findings of
this data set suggested that there was a significant difference in the rankings of core
temperature between the groups in the cold, neutral and hot environments. These findings
made sense in the real world because again the environment you are in affects how your core
temperature feels and affects how it is ranked. This is shown in the data with the cold
environment being the lowest, hot environment being the highest and the neutral
environment in the middle.

The research question for this data set was, “Which conditions (no music, slow music or
upbeat music) were more favorable to participants while running on a treadmill? (Smallest
number= most favorable, largest number= least favorable.) The mean and standard deviation
for the slow music group was 2.8 and 0.42 respectively. The mean and standard deviation for
the upbeat music group was 1.4 and 0.52 respectively. The mean and standard deviation for
the no music group was 1.8 and 0.79 respectively. The mean rank for the slow music groups
was 2.8, 1.4 for the upbeat music group and 1.8 for the no music group. The analysis was
significant because the sig value was less than 0.05 at p = 0.006. The findings of this data set
suggested that there was a significant difference in the rankings between the groups and that
upbeat music was the most favorable while slow music was the least favorable. The findings
of this data set made sense because most people enjoy faster upbeat music while exercising,
especially cardio, opposed to slow music because it can keep them energized and motivated
while slow music can slow the tempo of the exercise making it harder or less enjoyable.
