Romans Road
Summary of Method – The Romans Road approach to evangelism is a simple way to present
the gospel to any non believer. This method has the evangelist take the believer through an
abbreviated version of the book of Romans. Because this method only has five steps and core
scriptures it is easy to memorize, making it a good tool for evangelism. The five steps are: One,
Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Two, Romans 6:23, “For
the wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Three,
Romans 5:8, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.” Four, Romans 10:9,13 “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and
believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. . . For ‘everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Lastly five, Romans 8:1i, “There is therefore now
no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Advantages of Using This Method – There are many advantages to using this method of
evangelism the first that comes to mind is that it is so easy to use because of how simple yet so
vast in truth is. Dr. Wheeler and Early, In their book ‘Everyday Evangelism” say that this method
is, “A simple yet powerful method of explaining why we need salvation, how God provided
salvation, how we can receive salvation, and what are the results of salvation.” ii It’s only five
steps, but gives the non-believer a summary of the gospel as well as actual scripture.
Disadvantages of Using This Method – While this method of evangelism is simple if you don’t
have the scripture memorized and don’t have a bible, this method can not be used. This is why as
an evangelist a Christian should never be stuck with one method. Also, being a simple method
does not mean being a short method. Requiring you to walk someone through scripture, it will

take some time to walk through the Romans Road, this make the method not too effective in a
busy street evangelism setting.
Servant Evanglism
Summary of Method – Servant Evangelsim is a relational form of evangelism in which the
believer communicates the gospel through his/her actions, reflecting the servanthood of Jesus.
Dr. Wheeler in his book ‘Servant Evangelism’ describes this method as, “A combination of
single acts of kindness and intentional personal evangelism.”iii Servant Evangelism is all about
building a unique relationship with the people around you and loving them in such a way that
they can’t give credit to anyone but Jesus.
Advantages of Using This Method – The method of evangelism often has high impact on the
people who accept the gospel this way, why? Because, they have slowly come to know and see
the goodness of our Lord and the sweet love of Jesus through the servanthood of the evangelist.
Another advantage to doing this is, one, you are living your life in a way that all believers should
be and, two, you end up creating life long bonds with the people you evangelize to.
Disadvantages of Using This Method – Servant Evangelism is very low risk method of
evangelism. The reason why it’s low risk is because there aren’t many people who will hate,
persecute, and attack someone who is going out of their way to serve them. However, using this
method requires a life that is above reproach. If your life fails to be above reproach your actions
will have been done in vain. That’s why the huge disadvantage of this method is living your life
under a microscope. All that you do must be for God and reflect his glory or you will not see the
harvest.

Door-to-Door
Summary of Method – Door-to-Door Evangelism is a method of confrontational evangelism
where the believer takes the gospel to the non-believer in the comfort of their own homes, or
porch. This method has been most commonly adopted by Mormons and Jehovas Witness. In
Christianity Today’s article by Louis Markos, Markos describes this method as, “The door-to-
door method follows a sales model, with the evangelist approaching a stranger and then taking
him through a carefully scripted gospel presentation (the booklet of choice in my day was ‘The
Four Spiritual Laws’)”iv While this method seems to take a very traditional approach it is often
used in church plants in urban areas.
Advantages of Using This Method –An advantage to this method is that it is one of the most
effective methods of evangelism for canvasing an area and reaching the most amount of people.
As mentioned before a lot of church plants use this method to flyer for their church as well as
share the gospel. Door-to-door evangelism has proven time and time again that is the most
effective in reaching the largest amount of people.
Disadvantages of Using This Method – A huge downfall to this method is that since the
evangelist is taking the gospel to the non-believers area of authority, the non-believer has the
final say on everything. They have the power to not answer the door, turn you away, yell, slam
the door in your face. It is the evangelists job to take all that they say and respond in a way that
can bring glory to God in the mere minutes you are with them.
Application of These Methods to Your Own Life
What method best fits you? The method that best fits me and my life as I preach the gospel is
Servant Evangelism. I am a person who needs to be around people all the time and values
friendship. I also enjoy being able to help others and bring joy to all around me.

Why is this the best method for you? . Living a life of Servant Evangelism is the best for me
because I can do great ministry and grow in areas where I need refining. My strengths in this
method is my care for others and my natural desire to get to know strangers. However, as I said
this method also brings potential for spiritual growth. Where I do have a natural desire to kow
strangers and care for all it can easily turn to me seeking approval of others through works, but
living out this method allows me to take this struggle for approval, know whose approval is
important (God’s), and bring glory to Him.
Is this the best method to use with the people in your life? Why or why not? I do believe that
this method is the best to use with the people I am trying to reach in my life. I am pursuing a
degree in Next Generation Ministries and currently shepherd. With youth students trust is
established through a relationship and this method is all about building a relationship through
serving others. This method works well with youth students also because it requires that you put
in time. Overall this method works well with my life and provides a great option for evangelism
to those around me.
