Thesis statement: Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson had the same ideals but displayed their
thinking in different writing styles.
I.Introduction paragraph. Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson both hoped to make
changes in the United States government and they did so with varying tones.
a.Both men hoped to pursue independence from Great Britain and promote equal
rights in the government.
b.Paine used an informal tone in his writings while Jefferson was formal.
II.First main point. Introducing Thomas Paine’s writing tone and examples of his work,
showing how he used logos, pathos, and ethos.
a.In Paine’s Common Sense he used an informal tone to try and sway his audience
for America to become independent.
b.Paine used logos in the title of his work Common Sense.
III.Second main point. Thomas Jefferson uses a formal tone to show his assertiveness.
a.Jefferson’s formal tone proved to be successful in swaying the British in The
Declaration of Independence.
b.Jefferson used affirmative statements, such as “we mutually pledge.”
IV.Third main point. Though the men had opposite written styles they had the same main
goal for the United States.
a.Both men hoped for “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” in America.
b.Common Sense and The Declaration of Independence both address the horrible
acts by the British and the taking away of human rights.

V. Overall, the messages of Common Sense and The Declaration of Independence were
similar. Both works made large impacts on the United States’ independence.
