Thesis statement: Historical authors John Smith, William Bradford, and John Winthrop shared
many qualities, but told stories very differently.
I.Introduction paragraph. A number of early Americans wrote about their experiences
in the New World, including John Smith, William Bradford, and John Winthrop.
a.All three writers helped to lead their communities to deal with hard times in their
settlements.
b.Individual life challenges influenced the writing styles and viewpoints of the three
men.
II.First main point. Introduction to who each individual writer is and their individual
literary styles and motivations.
a.John Smith wrote in a plain style and enjoyed writing about the pleasures of the
New World.
b.William Bradford wrote to tell the story of the challenges of the pilgrimage.
c.John Winthrop enjoyed writing of his private accounts and wrote in a religious
style.
III.Second main point. Showing the comparisons and contrasts of the historians.
a.There was a desire for freedom in the New World among all three writers.
b.In contrast, William Bradford and John Winthrop viewed the New World as a land
of spiritual testing, while John Smith saw the New World as his chance at many
opportunities.
IV.Third main point. Comparing and contrasting the men as writers.

a.Writing while focused on the environment was a common theme among the three
men.
b.John Smith wrote to be published where the other two men did not initially write
to have their work seen.
Despite their many differences, the biggest commonality between the three men is
that they all contributed greatly to literature during their lifetimes.
