American Literature from Early Colonial Period to American Renaissance
Literature is important to society for at least two reasons; it opens the audience to the perception of the world from
the writer’s perspective and probes the audience to deepen its thinking and open his mind to other ideologies.
America was in the colonial era from around 1492 to 1763 while the American renaissance lasted from 1830 to
1865, two periods that held different literature. These two eras were unique in their formats and writing styles
mostly because of the different environments and influences from religion and culture and, therefore, play a big
role in the Americas current literature and society as a whole.
It is important to also view literature from different perspectives to achieve a well-rounded figure. Taking a
Christian point of view, one is able to see the importance of studying literature and the different ways religion
influenced it at the time (Reynolds, 2015). Literature enables one to appreciate words and the power they held at
the time. Colonial literature was rooted in Presbyterian and puritan religions and therefore, greatly influenced
writers such as William Bradford and John Winthrop in their works. They were formatted in theological studies
and hymns all written in clear language and with specific bible references.
Moreover, literature helps in the understanding of society. In the colonial era, most writing revolved around
reverence to God and everything being according to his will while the American renaissance era mainly revolved
around the American dream and opportunities. Though Christianity was dominant in both eras, studying them is
important in determining the strength of the faith. Furthermore, studying literature enables understanding human
ideologies and beliefs (Reynolds, 2015). The renaissance literature was filled with complexity, irony and linguistic
riches that clearly contrasted the clear and plain language of colonial literature thus showing the evolution of
language use and the appreciation of new literary styles.
Literature is educative, entertaining and captivating and plays huge roles in society and will continue doing so. It is
important to study and even more so to appreciate everyone’ perspective as it brings out different ideologies
depending on the point of view. The styles, formats are capable in shaping the society of the past, present and even
future.
