Many domestic abuse victims find that it is impossible to leave their abusive relationship
because of the fear and controlling nature of their abuser; however, from my personal experience,
it is possible and worth it. Affection is something that all children need to feel secure, but it was
missing from my equation as a child. The lack of affection caused me to find it with anyone who
paid attention to me. Unfortunately, it led me into a physically, sexually, and mentally abusive
relationship for three years. The abuse caused me to walk on eggshells when my abuse was
around and doubt my self-worth. One day, I decided enough is enough and that his temper did
not define me. I had no job, no money, and no friends or family; therefore, leaving felt
impossible. The odds were stacked against me, but I knew that escape was my only chance at
survival. One day my abuser left me alone in the house. I saw my chance and ran to a neighbor’s
house and called the police. When they finally arrived, I knew he could not hurt me anymore.
Leaving was the scariest, yet the most exhilarating action that I could have taken in that situation.
Even when things seem catastrophic and there is no way out, remember, there is always a way.
