Step 1: Classification Essay Planning and Outline
Directions: Using the assigned topic, complete all of the elements of the planning; otherwise, the
content of your piece will not be accurate.
Topic: Types of College Students
Three categories: Commuter Students, Working Students, International Students
Attitude/Point: To explain the difference between these 3 students and how life looks for
them in while in college
Audience: Students considering college
Purpose: To help potential students understand what college life will be like
Topic Sentence: Students that are considering college as freshman should understand what
college life will look like if they are, commuter students, working students, or international
students.
Thesis Statement: To be a college student, as an international student, you will have to
consider what country you want to reside in. As a working student, you will have to
consider what classes to take and at what time according to your work schedule. Lastly, as
a commuter student, you will have to decide how far you want to commute and how long it
will take to get to and from school.
Brainstorm Characteristics: where you will work while in school, what state you want to
travel to as an international student, how far you are willing to commute, how much will it
cost to commute, how many hours can you work while in college, are there any other
international students going to this college

Step 2: Classification Essay Rough Draft
Directions: Write a rough draft that follows your outline, beginning with your introduction
paragraph. As you write your body paragraphs, do not worry about spelling or grammar;
just
let your thoughts flow. End with a good concluding paragraph that restates your
controlling idea or expresses a thought that restates the significance of the categories
of classification and shows how the parts contribute to the function of the whole. It must
be a 5-paragraph essay using 400- 450 words.
College is a melting pot of people. Everyone is coming from all different walks of life. Some
students from different countries may choose to travel to the states to receive their education
from a university or college. Researching what colleges or universities that have a good
international program would be beneficial to these types of students.
On the other hand, commuting students may still want to go to college but live at home or live off
campus with a roommate. These students typically like the luxury of living at home or living on
their own while getting an education. Less roommates and more quiet spaces to study.
Furthermore, there are those students who must work will in college to be able to pay for their
education. Some students are coming in on a scholarship and need money to take care of
themselves while in school. While some may need money to pay back loans given to them for
their education.
Out of all three types of students the International students face the biggest challenge of learning
a different language and making sure that the university or college is a good fit for them. While
the other two types of students will have to make decisions like where they will live or what type
of work they can get to fit into there already busy schedule with school.
In conclusion, all off these things have to be considered when you are ready to further your
education as a first year student. Some would advise those that are seeking to further their
education to consider these things in there junior or senior year of high school to ensure that you
have made the right decision for you going forward.
