While there may be different classifications of pet owners that each have unique
differences, they also have similarities; one prominent similarity between all of them is that they
love their pets. As scripture reminds us, “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is
to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and
prayer. If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus,
being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.” 1
Timothy 4:4-6 Whether you are a laid back, nervous newbie, or high maintenance type of pet
owner, each type of pet owner shares similarities despite their obvious differences.
As a laid-back pet owner, one may be viewed as lazy or careless when it comes to how
their pet lives. Most laid-back type of pet owners have owned an animal in the past, which is
what makes them so relaxed. They do not see the need for obedience training which gives their
pet the opportunity to “run amuck”. For instance, a person may be able to spot a laid-back pet
owner when they step into their hope by being greeted with a dog jumping on them and barking.
These types of pet owners tend to not housebreak their animals, letting them use the bathroom
indoors instead of out. Lastly, another aspect of their pet’s life that does not seem to be of any
concern is their nutrition. If someone is a laid-back pet owner, they may regularly feed their
animal table scraps, copious amounts of treats, and whichever food is the cheapest for their
meals.
This leads us to the second type of pet owner: The Nervous New Pet Owner. When
someone becomes a pet owner for the first time, it can be an overwhelming experience that
causes a lot of anxiety and overthinking. These types of pet owners are more likely to over
scrutinize every decision they make because they have never owned a pet before. They may
consult their vet or research via the internet the best types of food to feed the breed they now
own. A Nervous New Pet Owner may send their dog to obedience training because they too need
to be trained on simple commands they can use. These types of owners may also crate train their
animals; not allowing them to freely roam when they are not home because they are concerned
about their well-being when they are not around.
Lastly, and probably the most interesting, are the High-Maintenance type of pet owner.
These types of owners spare no expense when it comes to their pet. They are only feeding them
the best foods and regularly sending them to the vet for health checkups. This type of owner also
tends to celebrate their pet’s birthday regularly by giving them gifts or throwing them a “paw-

ty”. In the past, a high maintenance type of pet owner has also been seen taking their pets
everywhere with them, just as if they were another family member.
No matter what category a person falls into as a pet owner; Laid Back, High
Maintenance, or the Nervous Newbie, the love for their pet is apparent. Pet owners may have
different lifestyles with how they choose to raise their pet but at the end of the day they would do
anything for them because they still are part of the family. As installed to us through the bible,
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God
and knows God.” 1 John 4:7
