Pre-Lab Exercises
A student obtained the following data from a popcorn popping
experiment in which only water was lost during heating.
#
of kernels used = 10
Mass of empty evaporating dish = 49.0792 g
Mass of evaporating dish +kernels before heating = 50.7140 g
Mass of evaporating dish + kernels after heating = 50.4802
Use the data to answer the following questions:
1-What is the mass of the kernel ls before heating?
(Mass of evaporating dish +kernels before heating)- Mass of empty evaporating dish
= 50.7140- 49.0792= 1.6348 g
2-What is the mass of the kernels ls a after heating? (Mass of evaporating dish
+ kernels after heating) - Mass of empty evaporating dish = 50.4802 g-
49.0792 =1.4010 g
3-What is the mass of water that was lost during heating? Mass of kernel ls
before heating- mass of the kernels ls a after heating = 1.6348- 1.401=
0.2338 g
4-What is the percentage of water in this sample of popcorn? (Mass of water
lost from kernels/ mass of kernels before popped) x 100=
(0.0338/ 1.6348) x 100 = 14.3014436= 14 %
5-What is the percentage of duds in the sample?
(Amount of duds / number of kernels used) x 100=
(1/10) x 100= 10 %
