1. Title, Year
Whitewashing U.S. history: The marginalization of Latinx in
the Georgia Standards of Excellence, 2023
2. Theoretical Framework The theoretical framework for this article is based on the
critical race theory (CRT), as well as the Latino Critical Theory
(LatCrit) (Conner, 2023). According to the law in which they
originated, CRT and LatCrit theorize that colorblindness
maintains normality; generally, this is accomplished by
overlooking institutionalized racism. However, both CRT and
LatCrit encourage equality by exposing institutional racism and
unfair practices in education. Overall, CRT is based on four
significant elements. The first element states that, “racism is a
central, permanent, and ‘normal’ part of society” (Conner,
2023, p. 1300). Second, to disturb how society views race,
counternarratives and experiential knowledge are important to
implement. Third, a racially oppressive institution is supported
by “colorblindness.” Fourth, if the status quo is ever to be
challenged, an interdisciplinary approach must be instituted.
LatCrit goes deeper as it examines more than black and white
individuals, but studies the various experiences of Latinxs,
whose individualisms are multidimensional (Conner, 2023).
Similar to CRT, LatCrit’s primary focus is racism, however,
LatCrit recognizes that race correlates with multiple Latinx
individualisms like generational status and language. Meaning,
LatCrit deals with the challenges that are usually overlooked by
theorists who study race. Examples of such issues include
ethnicity, race, phenotype, immigration, sexuality, language,
and culture.
3. Research Question(s) To what extent are Latinxs, Latin American immigrants, and
the region of Latin America included in the GSE for U.S.
History?
How are Latinxs, Latin American immigrants, and the region
of Latin America portrayed in the GSE for U.S. History?
4. Methodology and
Results
A mixed methods content analysis was used as the
methodology of this study (Conner, 2023). The focus was on
the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in K-12 for the US
History curriculum; particularly grades 3 , 4 , 5 , & 8 since it
