Problem Proposal Assignment 2
The problem that I will be addressing occurred in a New York City Middle School
located in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx in December of 2011, two months after the tragic
9/11 Terrorist Attacks. I was an intern at Intermediate School XXX at the time and remarkably
familiar with the sixth graders. The incident occurred on a Friday in Mrs. Bryant’s homeroom.
Mrs. Bryant was absent on that day and Miss. Wayman was the substitute.
Henry Thomas, and Shelton Jones told Miss. Wayman that Michael Jordan took
deodorant out from his gym back and mimicked the motion of a gun. Michael Jordan is an
African American male and had no record of behavior issues prior to that day. Ms. Wayman was
a recent college graduate and lacked the classroom management skills needed for this age group
and unfortunately, some of the students were disrespectful thus setting a bad precedence. Ms.
Wayman reported the incident to Assistant Principal Leah Mallory. Michaels parents were
immediately notified, and Michael was suspended from school and scheduled for Expulsion
pending the outcome of an Expulsion hearing. The reason for this action was a “threat”. Per
District policy suspensions remain in effect during the time of the expulsion procedures.
A suspended student may not enter any school or school grounds in NYC School District
7, attend any day or night school function in the district, or ride a school bus, there are
exceptions for prearranged meetings with a school administrator.
