ACTION PLAN 2
Action Plan: Culturally Responsive Teaching
Culturally Responsive Teaching is an approach in education that recognizes the importance of
diverse cultural backgrounds of students in a classroom. The goal is to create an inclusive
learning environment that all students feel welcomed, valued, and respected which in turn
enhances their academic and emotional success. Culturally Responsive Teaching aims to bridge
the gap of different cultures that are in a classroom of students and educators to ensure that the
environment is inclusive, equitable, and effective learning experience for everyone. CRT fosters
a community for all learners and addresses the disparities that can be seen in education. Taking
the time to intergrate students’ cultures into their learning process increases engagement and
retention of the material they are learning.
This is important to the school that I currently teach in as it is a Title One school that has
not only a diverse student population but also a transient population is students due to the low
socio-economic area it is in. Duran-Narucki (2008) shows how students are exposed to
substandard environments when they are socioeconomically disadvantaged which in turn affects
their success in school. Culturally Responsive Teaching helps create an inclusive that is needed
especially at Title One schools because these students really need to feel valued because school
may be the only place they feel that. Since there is sometimes an achievement gap in Title One
schools, CRT can help close it by making the lessons relevant to their cultures to increase their
engagement and educational outcomes. “As with learning, motivation is not observed directly
but, rather, inferred from behavioral indexes such as task choices, effort, persistence, and goal-
directed activities” (Schunk, 2020, p. 361). Students are more motivated when they feel like the
lessons are relevant to them. CRT creates a more supportive enviroment that meets the needs of
all students and has a postitive effective on their learning environment.
ACTION PLAN 3
Action Plan
The goal of this action plan is to make sure that Culturally Responsive Teaching is implemented
in schools to create an inclusive environment that is welcoming and respecting of all cultural
backgrounds. Enhancing student engagement, closing the achievement gap, and creating an
inclusive environment is the goal of integrating Culturally Responsive teaching. The
commitment of the school is to show by actions that the culture of the school respects and values
the diverse student population. The plan starts with the foundation of educating teachers through
professional development, changes and updates in the curriculum adjustments, and making sure
that there is follow-up and feedback on the effectiveness of the interventions put in place for
CRT.
