Challenges and Possibilities Paper

Abstract
Technology has played a role in education for a long time. Recent developments for
technology in education were made after the world experienced the pandemic that we all know
as COVID-19. The role of technology will only get greater within the classroom as more and
more technology is created and humans become more innovative. With these new
technological advances come many challenges that include using technology responsibly,
safeguarding student information and data, while at the same time supporting learning. With
the integration of technology, we must ensure that the focus is on creating opportunities for
students to learn as well as expanding the knowledge of the educators who will provide this
learning. Artificial intelligence will continue to grow and leave a mark within schools. There will
be learning opportunities more advanced than ever imagined.

Challenges and Possibilities for the Future of Educational Technology
In the past recent years, the field of education has advanced and transformed,
specifically within educational technology. The transformation has been driven by advances in
digital tools, enhanced access to information, and the ever-changing models of teaching and
learning. Technology integration was sped up when the world was hit by the pandemic. This
forced educators and schools to adapt swiftly by moving to virtual and hybrid environments.
This made technology integration no longer an option, but a priority and foundational element
of the new age educational experience. Emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI)
and innovative technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality have helped change the
ways that students engage in instruction and educators deliver the instruction.
This paper will explore the key emerging themes in educational technology, including
individualization, equity, digital citizenship, and the evolving roles of the teacher within the
changes that are among us within educational technology. It is the educators duty and job to
understand how these trends are being experienced, along with identifying and working
through the opportunities and concerns that will be brought with them. The issues of screen
time, privacy, access disparities, and proper, ethical use of AI present diverse challenges that
require thoughtful consideration. By reviewing the current dynamic and looking to what the
future holds, this paper will explore the possible directions for the future of educational
technology. This paper will also highlight how educational technology is having an impact
globally, while discussing the safeguards needed to ensure security and effective use.
Educational technology is evolving daily, and being aware of where it is now and where it is
going will help secure a future that makes it safe and effective for all to use within the realm of
education.

Current Landscape of Educational Technology
What was once a supplemental tool within the classroom has now become a vital and
central component of the world of technology. Educational technology has redefined how
students access knowledge. It has also changed the way that teachers have to prepare and
deliver instruction. Schools have begun navigating this technological evolution and educators
must quickly gain an understanding of the potential of these tools and the complexities that
these tools bring with them as they are integrated into lessons daily. There is an uptick in
education that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and
technology plays an integral role in continuing this development. Leavy et al., (2023) remind us
that the influence that these technologies will have on all aspects of life will have a considerable
impact on the workforce, that will lead to a transformation of all industries. It is our job to
prepare the students for this development.
Many practitioners see technology as an opportunity to enhance engagement among
students and differentiate instruction. It creates an opportunity to make learning more
meaningful for students with varying learning styles and individual needs. Practitioners also
express skepticism with educational technology as it can create a reliance and overt need to be
used. As Çelik et al., (2023) says the most important aspect of the use of these devices is critical
to child development and have a positive impact on child development and stimulate their
sense of curiosity. This is good, but the constant innovative changes could also create a sense of
pressure to have to “keep up” with each new piece of technology.
There is not much of a difference between what students and teachers expect with the
integration of educational technology. In their article, Leavy et al., (2023) reiterate that students
already have a digital imprint these days and the introduction to new technologies is pretty
natural to them, especially through STEM education. The new generation and generations to

come will be digital natives, expecting learning to be instant, interactive, and engaging. Students
are comfortable navigating digital tools and prefer learning that is technology-based. Teachers
will have to emphasize structure, meaningful engagement, and pedagogical intent. The
expectation is for teachers to align the technology usage with the curriculum and making it
meaningful. Technology can become a distraction with unclear instructional purpose.
Recent Developments
Eductaional technology has become commonplace within schools. Educational
environments must undergo significant changes and digital curriculum is becoming more
prevalent (Samuelsson, 2025). Artificial intelligence has been at the forefront of the recent
developments of educational technology. Artificial intelligence has helped form what is foreseen
as a more personalized educational experience and can also help support students with
disabilities by providing technologies that can help bridge learning gaps. Coding has also been
something that has been introduced to early learning students ages 6 – 8 to improve students’
cognitive development and computational skills, which will, in turn create a base for long-term
growth (Hu et al., 2025). Augmented reality and virtual reality have also been found to be
immersive technologies that will grow to be used in the classroom. Educational technology also
has a focus on creating an inclusive environment and the new developments have aimed to do
such by incorporating interfaces that make education more accessible to all students. The
situated learning theory has also emerged with ensuring that there is an integration of learning
contents, intuitive knowledge, and learning tools to allow students to devise solutions for real-
world problems (Hu et al., 2025). The recent developments of educational technology only
continue to grow rapidly each day.

Current Issues Facing the Field and Best Practices
Educational technology comes with many challenges, but with these challenges come
best practices that will help ensure that technology is being incorporated effectively. There are
many challenges that stand in the way of the effective integration of educational technology.
One of the first issues us the lack of training for teachers to be able to deliver instruction with
educational technology effectively. Many practitioners view the time needed to learn how to
properly use it takes away from other activities that could be happening within the classroom,
and most teachers do not view that waste of time as profitable (Mairal-Llebot et al., 2023). If
there is a lack of training, that means that there is a lack in professional development to
improve the pedagogy of educational technology.
Another issue that is discussed is the access that students and teachers may have. Some
schools are underfunded and do not have access to the same technologies and opportunities of
others. The digital divide significantly affects schools that are underfunded, as the same learning
and impact will not be the same in these schools. The other side of this issue is that the schools
that do have access to all of the resources could become over-reliant on technology. This means
that some schools could use it for its novelty rather than its pedagogical purpose. This leads to
technology becoming a distraction rather than a technological tool for enhancement. This
places students’ data at risk and creates another issue within cybersecurity and privacy.
Ritter et al., (2023) speaks about how educational technology is rapidly evolving and one
of the challenges that is rising is higher learning institutions’ inability to keep up. Schools are not
embracing its ability to create opportunities for students to earn degrees and certifications.
Schools are not understanding that the value in education is no longer intertwined with the
name of an institution, but with the skills that come with the degrees that are earned. The
technological skills that ed tech can provide are shaping the future as we know it.

Best practices for using educational technology effectively include several strategies. The
main thing to remember is to keep pedagogy as the main focus. Plan lessons that are effective
and meaningful to bridging gaps within technology usage. Ensure that students understand
digital citizenship and the importance of recognizing that your digital usage leaves an everlasting
imprint. Teachers should also be using evidence based tools that produce results and not just
use any application to consume time. Ensure that you are always open to learning and
development and keep the mindset of a continuous learner.
Emerging Trends in Educational Technology in K12 from a Global Perspective
The Horizon Report conducts annual research by asking leaders in the field of
educational technology to gauge future developments for technologies, project the trends that
will likely impact teaching and learning and determine when these trends are likely to be
adopted for use in classrooms. Using recent editions of the Horizon Report, information gleaned
from Gartners Hype Cycle, and recent scholarly literature, you will predict three technology
trends that are likely to have significant global impact in the next 5 years. You will also indicate
what these trends will likely mean for teachers and for students. If possible, talk with a number
of teachers in order to gain their perspectives regarding what they see as having an impact in
the classroom over the next 5 years.
Future Directions in Educational Technology
The future of educational technology is described in the Horizon Report. It mentions and
features the development of finding appropriate uses for AI, supporting AI fluency, supporting
equitable and inclusive learning, protecting data and privacy, navigating misinformation, and
supporting mental health as the future of educational technology (Pelletier et al., 2024). The
Horizon report helps us to understand that there are emerging trends in educational technology
that align with the thoughts of professionals within the field of education. One of these

predicted technologies that will have a significant impact is immersive learning through
augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). These developments will create learning
environments that can be used for students to explore and engage in content in meaningful and
interactive ways.
Another precedent that has been set for the future is the development of generative AI
in education. Tools like ChatGPT are beginning to be integrated into the educational setting and
can create personalized experiences for students and families. According to (Gartner Hype Cycle
Research Methodology | Gartner), generative AI is currently at the peak of inflated
expectations, where some companies are taking actions and some are experiencing failures. A
third and final trend that is expected to explode is the use of methods to securely use
technology and secure academic credentials. Block chaining is a method of gaining qualifications
and simplifying the verification process for employers and institutions. It is currently in the
innovation trigger stage of (Gartner Hype Cycle Research Methodology | Gartner). The hype
cycle helps to separate the hype from the real drivers of technology’s promise, reduce the risk
of technology investments, and compare the understanding of a technology’s business value
with objectivity (Gartner Hype Cycle Research Methodology | Gartner).
Many teachers have already begun exploring these new innovations that are expected to
have a breakthrough. Teacher that I currently work with are attending professional development
to assist them with introducing these ed tech methods into their classrooms. Some teachers
believe that we are still a long way away from a true technology breakthrough in education,
while others believe that we are right in the middle of it. Regardless of what is to come, we have
to prepare for the future and ensure that students are prepared as well. Most believe that AI is
the driving force of education in the future, especially within special education.

Safeguards in Educational Technology
Educational institutions will continue to adopt emerging technologies. One of the
priorities that comes with adopting these safeguards is to ensure that safeguards are put into
place to protect students, teachers, and the institutions that will be using them. Data privacy,
responsible AI usage, and equitable access all fall under the umbrella of safeguards needed to
ensure ed tech success. Fostering responsible relationships and digital interactions will help
safeguard against potential online threats to all of these domains (Prasetiyo et al., 2024). By
implementing safeguards, institutions protect stakeholders and ensure that the benefits of
technology outweigh the downfalls. Schools must be proactive in identifying and supporting
students and families who lack access to the internet and reliable devices. It is also critical to
establish ethical guidelines and instructions to reinforce critical thinking and academic integrity
among students. It is also very important to follow regulations under all of the governing
policies of data.
From a biblical standpoint we must ensure hat we are remaining truthful and practicing
stewardship when introducing these methods. The Bible speaks on being fair and equitable by
saying that God’s fairness is a model that all leaders should follow (King James Bible ,1992,
Romans 2:11). Ensuring that all have equal access to educational technology is a matter of being
a Christian. Schools will have to try their best to eliminate barriers for those who are at a
disadvantage and allow them the opportunity to display their worth and learn. As Christians, we
have a higher calling to be stewards that lead with integrity and wisdom. Ensuring that there are
safeguards for technology not only reflect a biblical commitment, but also align us with God by
uplifting others.

Conclusion
The breakthrough of educational technology is among us. Being prepared for what is to
come should be every educational institution’s top priority. Preparing for these technologies to
be safely and effectively used will be something that needs to be introduced to students, faculty,
and staff. The integration of technology holds the potential to revolutionize teaching and
learning globally. As schools embrace innovation, it is essential to address issues of equity,
training, and privacy while at the same time providing adequate learning opportunities for
educators to ensure that technology integration is done meaningfully. Educational technology
and its future depend on factors such as the tools that are being used and how equitably they
are used to serve the needs of all learners and educators. We have explored the current state of
educational technology and the direction that it is headed, while focusing on the barriers and
best practices throughout this paper. As we gain more knowledge, it is my hope that we can
ensure that educational technology has a prominent future as anticipated.
