92–94. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-015-0052-5
For this source, they took a close look at the framework behind the PBIS model and what
all exactly it represents. In this article, the author came to the conclusion after much
research on the topic that “PBIS represents a working model that can be adapted to fit the
growing body of evidence supporting acceptance and mindfulness-based interventions for
school-age children.” With that being said, one could assume that PBIS is not just a
system to try to curb classroom management or behavioral issues amongst school kids in
a classroom – it really does attempt to reach out and show those students who may be
struggling with acceptance what it feels like to be accepted by peers and staff when PBIS
tools are implemented schoolwide. Also, one could assume that interventions are not
meant to be mindless modifications and accommodations put into place for the sake of
being put into place. This article goes more into how mindful interventions really can
affect school-age children and work wonders for their educational careers as a whole.

The main reason I pulled this source to use in my research over my topic for my overall
project was because this article tells a real-world story of how one teacher really went all
in on doing whatever it took to implement the PBIS system in her specific school and the
benefits and rewards that were reaped as a result. This article dives headfirst into the
many different stages of PBIS implementation and how to advocate for a school-wide
PBIS model. Also, the author discusses the importance and huge role that school
administrations play in really making PBIS work to the fullest extent possible. Data
analyzation plays a key role in this school’s overall PBIS effectiveness, and the author
lays that out in this article for the reader to see. Overall, I think that this article is helpful
in that it shows a real-world positive example of how PBIS isn’t just a school phrase –
it’s a movement that can have a real impact on a school system when used correctly.

Estrapala, S., Rila, A., & Bruhn, A. (2020). A Systematic Review of Tier 1 PBIS Implementation
in High Schools. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 1.
https://doi.org/10.1177/1098300720929684
This article is a great piece of research and review in terms of showing Tier 1 PBIS and
how it can be successfully put into place and implemented throughout different schooling
systems to help improve things such as: school climate, grad rates overall, reduction of
classroom management and behavioral issues. This article lays out some of the barriers
that schools see in terms of really and truly putting PBIS into practice. Many different
factors are outlined as barriers needed to overcome to be able to successfully implement
and use school-wide PBIS including: school sizes, organizational cultures, and the
different levels many students are in terms of overall development. This article looks at
16 different published research articles and studies done at the high school secondary
level and it looks at many of the different challenges high schools, in particular, face
when trying to put new PBIS models into practice.
Hellmuth, J. (2019). Starting a PBIS program in an inpatient setting. The Brown University Child
and Adolescent Behavior Letter, 1–7. https://doi.org/10.1002/cbl.30440
This article takes a unique look at one way in which PBIS is positively being used
through Bradley Hospital’s Children’s Inpatient Unit (CIU) in Rhode Island. This article
delves into why they decided to use an educational tool such as PBIS to try to help boost
social-emotional learning amongst the patients in this specific hospital. Also, this article
shows how patients and their positive behaviors were reinforced by way of PBIS and its
use and implementation here. This article goes into great detail as to show the many
different goals of using PBIS is this sort of setting including: increasing morale amongst
the many different child patients, retention of employees by way of an overall boosted
and positive culture as it relates to safety and overall positivity and morale as a whole,
and to help foster trauma-related attitudes and how to deal with those effectively,
carefully and successfully overall.

For this article I plan to use in my overall project for this course, I decided to use this in
particular because it is a case study on overall effectiveness of using six specific factors
and how successful the PBIS outcome was because of said six specific factors. Those
factors included: “improvement of participants’ knowledge, administrator support,
incorporation of active learning activities, duration, fostering coherence, and timing.”
Moreover, this case study article looks at and dives deeper into whether or not there is a
discernable relationship between each of the above factors and which ones are more
effective or less effective than the others. This article lays out the results of the overall
case study which reveals several great techniques that school systems can try to use in
their own PBIS implementations and which ones to steer clear of. Also, this article looks
at the implications of PBIS trainings, their effectiveness and professional development in
regards to PBIS overall.
