Instructions for Best Practices
The integration of podcasts into lesson planning, project-based learning, or instructional
tools provides a unique pedagogical approach for educators seeking to cultivate collaboration
among students and extend learning beyond the classroom; however, before implementation,
familiarity with current platforms, the fundamental structure of podcasts, available tools,
alignment with learning objectives, and general best practices are recommended for successful
execution. The following instructions serve to guide the educator through the process of
incorporating this technology and utilizing its best qualities to ensure an equitable and engaging
educational experience for a myriad of learners.
As there are numerous elements to podcasting, the foremost to consider is the platform on
which your videos will be posted. YouTube, Amazon Music, Spotify, and Facebook are several
popular platforms to consider when preparing to create content. It is crucial to contemplate what
platforms have high engagement, as selecting a student-friendly and familiar platform may be the
difference between accessible and inconvenient.
Additionally, more crucial than which platform to post your content, planning what will
occur for the duration of the video, and addressing each element of a complete podcast is the
cornerstone of encouraging collaboration and extended learning. No different than lesson
planning, each video must include the following elements: Class address and morning salutations
(welcome and introduction of the topic of discussion), transition to bellringer or pre-diagnostic
exercise (pose a question for students to consider for the beginning of the video), breakdown/
explanation of the rest of the class (explanation of the rest of the video and what students can
expect), transition to core content, and a transition to what was covered during the time followed
by closing thoughts and an exit slip for continued learning. Aside from the integration of

transitional background music, the parallel between in-class instruction and crafting podcasts is
evident; therefore, educators can confidently record and post their work as a template for their
students, in addition to an instructional tool for educational and demonstrative purposes.
Furthermore, regarding available tools, utilizing resources, such as DIY content on
YouTube or instructional walkthroughs provided by the recording software most available, can
be useful resources when creating a podcast. Although these instructions serve to provide the
educator with the most feasible and accessible route to constructing and implementing podcasts
for educational purposes, surveying additional resources that expound on specific elements of
crafting a video adds valuable perspective and can enrich the process. Moreover, ensure learning
objectives are addressed as the video progresses. For example, if students are to engage in an
excerpt of a particular book and create annotations, the content the educator provides can, while
explaining each step, video an example of this procedure with identifiable transitions; therefore,
addressing the learning objective and supplementing this objective with a demonstration. Not all
content is demonstrative; however, visual depictions are a powerful tool for differentiating
instruction.
Lastly, as students remain the epicenter of all academic engagement, general best
practices for facilitating students creating their own podcasts parallel previous instructions with
several additions: survey methods of topic selection that align with core content, explore digital
ethics and appropriate use of equipment, review elements of narrative writing and storytelling for
conveying points, observe and practice script writing to ensure clarity, and segmatize large
projects into achievable, measurable portions. These practices, along with the previously
mentioned, can assist educators in the practical application of podcasting and ensure the
successful integration of this technology for the benefit of the learning environment.

the audience in meaningful manner, it can be difficult to determine without a frame of reference.
