Purpose of Technology in Education
Technology plays a huge role in modern education, serving various purposes to enhance
teaching and learning experiences. It facilitates access to information, promotes interactive and
engaging learning environments, and prepares students for the digital world they will encounter
in their future careers. As educators, we have a professional obligation to include technology in
our curriculum to ensure that students develop essential digital literacy skills and are adequately
prepared to navigate an increasingly technology-driven society. Research has shown that well-
implemented technology integration can positively impact student learning outcomes, fostering
critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity (Mishra & Koehler, 2006).
Biblical Defense
As a Christian educator, my responsibility to include technology in my curriculum is
rooted in biblical principles that emphasize stewardship, excellence, and relevance in education.
Proverbs 1:5 states, "Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands
obtain guidance." This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding,
which aligns with the goal of using technology to facilitate learning and enhance educational
experiences. Also, 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever
you do, do all to the glory of God." As educators, our ultimate goal is to glorify God in all
aspects of our work, including the use of technology in education. By using technology to create
engaging and effective learning opportunities, we can honor God by guiding the resources and
abilities He has entrusted to us for the benefit of our students. Additionally, Proverbs 22:6
instructs us, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart
from it." Incorporating technology into education equips students with the skills and knowledge
they need to navigate an increasingly digital world while staying grounded in biblical principles.
It is our responsibility as educators to prepare students for success in both their academic and
spiritual journeys. “Technology-enabled learning environments allow less experienced learners
to access and participate in specialized communities of practice, graduating to more complex
activities and deeper participation as they gain the experience needed to become expert members
of the community” (Thomas, 2016).
Impact on Teaching Approach
Based on my professional and biblical responsibilities, I approach technology integration
in my lessons with intentionality and purpose. I strive to select technology tools and resources
that align with learning objectives and enhance student engagement and understanding. Also, I
prioritize digital citizenship and ethical use of technology, guiding students to use technology
responsibly and discerningly in accordance with biblical values. “Increased connectivity also
increases the importance of teaching learners how to become responsible digital citizens. We
need to guide the development of competencies to use technology in ways that are meaningful,
productive, respectful, and safe” (Thomas, 2016). Ultimately, my goal is to create a learning
environment where technology serves as a tool for facilitating deeper learning, fostering
creativity, and empowering students to fulfill their God-given potential.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the purpose of technology in education is all around, encompassing access
to information, interactive learning environments, and preparation for the digital age. As
educators, we have a professional and biblical responsibility to integrate technology into our
curriculum, ensuring that students develop essential digital literacy skills and are equipped to
navigate a technology-driven society. Research shows the positive impact of well-implemented
technology integration on student learning outcomes, fostering critical thinking, collaboration,
and creativity (Mishra & Koehler, 2006). Guided by these principles, my approach to technology
integration is deliberate and purposeful. I select technology tools that align with learning
objectives and foster responsible use of technology in line with biblical values.
