COMORBID DIAGNOSES DSM 2
Introduction
In this journal article, the information provided will explain Comorbid Diagnoses (DSM),
compare and contrast two written works on Comorbid Diagnoses (DSM), and a personal
reflection linking my experiences to the content of the article. The term " Comorbid” refers to the
link of ASD to other conditions. ASD and intellectual disability are highly comorbid. These
people have severe social communication deficits, confined and repetitive activities, and an
intellectual disability (Kroncke, Willard, & Huckabee, 2016). One crucial aspect of examining
the co-occurrence of ID and ASD is the need to regularly reevaluate cognitive abilities since
cognitive functioning is more prone to fluctuate in individuals with autism spectrum disorders
and is especially unstable in the early stages of life.
Abstract
There are key similarities and differences between both journal articles. According to
LaBarbera, “DSM-5, challenges in creating, sustaining, and comprehending treatments include
the inability to modify behavior to accommodate various social contexts,” (2017). This statement
closely aligns with the other source, which states, “Finding correlations between attention and
impairment may help with targeted treatment development” (Ng, Heinrich, & Hodges,
2021).?LaBarbera then continues his theory by stating, “Social skills groups are also a popular
instructional strategy” (LaBarbera, 2017). According to Ng, Heinrich, & Hodges, “Behavioral
treatments may enhance social functioning” (2021). When treatment plans are developed
effectively, children who have comorbid diagnoses can be provided with the right resources. The
evidence of Comorbid Diagnoses was evident in both the journal article and the book.

Journal Article Review: Comorbid Diagnoses (DSM)
In my personal experience, from the content read, I can verify that numerous conditions
can align with ASD. Comorbid Diagnoses can sometimes be unverifiable to doctors who are
focused on one condition. Currently, this is something I am curious about. Although my student
has not been officially diagnosed with ASD he has all the signs and is currently getting therapy.
Since we do not have the diagnoses of ASD it is hard to correlate all the behaviors to the
disability. Although his mom is not completely aware of the exact diagnoses she does seem to
collaborate well with all members of his IFSP team to acknowledge old and new behaviors.
Although I have been working with this student professionally for 2 years, it is not certain
whether the child will be diagnosed with another condition in the future.
In conclusion, Comorbid Diagnoses is something that many people may know about but
do not know the proper name. Sometimes it is hard to acknowledge which conditions may
directly be associated with ASD. Treatment plans are important to implement in the classroom
and at home to help aid in the development of students with Comorbid Diagnoses. Resources are
available worldwide to help school systems and parents provide for their children regarding their
newly diagnosed conditions. Both the article and textbook proved to be beneficial to my journal
article. The textbook included a lot of important information about DSM regarding social
exchanges that the journal article did not include. From the information I have learned, I believe
researchers are on the right path regarding Comorbid Diagnoses within ASD.
