We all know sometimes children get distracted and may act out in class. It
may be because they are tired of sitting or tired of being in school.
Depending on how the teacher handles the situation is how a child may
respond to them. Children learn a lot from how to communicate and act with
their peers. Some educators believe that the best way to teach academics is
through social interactions (Maag, 2004). It is important to let your students
communicate with their classmates, but your students also need to know
when it is your time to talk, teach and when it is time for them to do work.
By using the medical model on a student can have a negative effect on a
child’s behavior. So many educators, doctors and parent’s jump to diagnose
someone with a medical disorder when they simply are just bored at school.
Diagnosing a student with a medical condition purposely places blame for
behaving poorly on the student (Maag, 2004). By doing that you are doing
something that could potentially make the child act out even more. Some
students may just be more challenging than others and some discipline
actions may not work with them like they do with your other students. If a
student knows you try and do the same type of discipline with every student
and they know they are unbothered by it they will continue to do the same
behavior.
I have seen many times of students knowing how to get attention.
Sometimes that may be them acting out in order to get my attention. In the
book it talks about so many times schools ignore the good behavior and pay
attention to the bad behavior. So why should kids behave in school if this is
the approach we take. In Contextual Variation they look at how context
gives behavior a meaning. It also says when it is looked over or manipulated
it has a negative effect. Students behave how they want to behave whether
it be the environment they are in or a certain circumstance (Maag,2004).
