#1: Analysis of Test of Early Reading Ability—Fourth Edition
Summary of Assessment
Frequently early childhood resources focus on reading “readiness”.
Early childhood educators look for indicators that a child is “ready” to learn
to read. However, the Test of Early Reading Ability – Fourth Edition (TERA-
4) does not focus on such a nebulous concept as “readiness”. Instead, the
TERA-4 identifies three early reading skills that children use to develop as
readers—recognition of the Alphabet, understanding of Conventions, and
ascertaining Meaning of print. The TERA-4 gives three subscores—
Alphabet, Conventions, and Meaning—and then creates a composite score
which indicates General Reading Ability for children ages 4-0 to 8-11.
Correct items are scored with a “1” and incorrect items are scored with a
“0”. If the student does not produce an answer within 15 seconds, the
administrator should prompt the student to answer. If the student still
hesitates to answer or will not answer, then the question is marked with a
“0”. The test makers specify that in the Convention subsection, children
ages 4-6 must be given items 1-14 and then establish basal and ceiling rules
at item 15 and afterwards.
Strengths and Weaknesses of the Assessment

feature. Through online scoring human error in converting raw scores to
