Vocabulary Added above
•
Check for understanding by observing when the students clap along to identify the
syllables. Also I will see who all is participating to show understanding.
•
Gauge for readiness by listening to choral responses and hand claps.
•
Say: "Now that we have identified two syllables words we will move to the table to
work on some."
Guided Practice: The Teacher Will Tell the Students
•
TTW hand out the paper with the two syllabus words on it. TTW remind the students
that a syllable is "a letter, or combination of letters. All words have syllables. A word
might have one, two, or even more syllables but we are working on two syllabus
words.
The teacher will also put the word list on the smart board for the students to see.
Lumber
Marble
Chicken
Candy
Rabbit
Number
Farmer
Shower
Folder
Honey
TTW tell the students to choose the method as to how they want to represent the two
syllable words. The students can circle the syllable, underline the syllabus, use a
highlighter to highlight the syllable or draw a line between it. (If someone prefers to
clap the syllable that will be fine. I will read the word to them and draw a line between
the syllables for them. They can also choose to draw a line and clap. TTW tell the
students if they are finished they can share their thoughts and answers with their table
partner.
•
TTW ask the students:
If you clap two times for the word how many syllable does that mean you hear?
Students do all words have syllable?
All words have at least how many syllables?
•
The teacher will check for understanding by listening to the students response and
observing their work.
•
The teacher will gauge readiness by the student’s response and listening for errors.
Independent Practice: TSW work on a handout about syllables. The students will identify
the syllables in the word by using a colored pencil or crayon to separate the syllables.
Closure: Teacher will replay song on board and give students an index card with a word that
they have to separate in syllabus by using different color marker to separate syllables.
DIFFERENTIATION

with the teacher so that the students receiving support will get the full understanding of
syllables.
Challenging Above-Average Students: Students who finish early will be allowed to choose
an activity or workstation off the choice board which are activities that are related to words
with syllabus. The students will practice writing two syllable words.
Facilitating a Classroom Environment that Supports Student Learning: Stations will be
set up for students such as writing station, independent station, word study station.
