Chapter 6 Video Case: Including Students with High-Incidence Learning Disabilities – Strategies for
Success
1.What are some of the supports that the inclusion teacher provides to students in her class?
Describe 3 different supports and how they help those students (1 example must support
students with their executive functions).
Students with learning disabilities often have trouble trying to connect new and prior knowledge.
Supports systems are put into place to make sure that the students follow through with accessing the
knowledge that he or she needs. Some of the supports that the inclusion teacher provides to students in
his or her class includes the use of graphic organizers, another adult or instructional assistant to help the
students, and step by step guides or instruction. Graphic organizers are visual tools. “They can reduce
cognitive demands by providing a framework for students to create a visual representation of the most
significant information in the text” (Singleton & Filce, 2015, p. 111). Using these prior to reading can help
with comprehension of the material. Having another adult or teacher in the classroom allows to keep
instruction going while the other teacher or both teacher can have more time help the students
individually. With executive functions, students have difficulty planning, managing time, and with
organization. Some steps teachers can take to help his or her students include having a daily class
routine that does not change, giving a step by step guide or instructions and having the students to
repeat them back, and checking in with the students frequently to make so he or she understands.
Another great step to help with reading comprehension is for the teacher to give the students colored
strips of paper to place under the sentences while the students are reading.
2.If you were a teacher in an inclusion setting, what information would you offer to all students
(with and without disabilities) about the different levels of support students receive to help

them be successful? Offer 2 points that can help students understand the need for
differentiated instruction and support.
In the video, the teacher shares a brief glimpse of what it is like in her inclusive classroom. If I
were a teacher in an inclusion setting, my first step of instruction would be to try to establish a good
relationship with every one of my students as well as the students’ parents. Keeping the students
parent informed of the students’ progress and including the parents in the process will keep learning
flowing. This step should start at the very initial start of the school year. This will set the tone of
the classroom and relationships from there on. I would always follow up with my students to make
sure that he or she is learning and understand the concepts with step by step instruction and hold
discussions. Every student is important regardless of his or her individual differences. That’s why it
is imperative to understand the need for differentiated instruction and always have supports that
help each student.
3.Now consider the biblical approach to special education to inform your thoughts on this topic.
Consider a passage of Scripture to support the fruits of the spirit that would guide your actions
as you collaborated with other teachers.
When it comes to educators it is imperative to collaborate with other educators to learn
different strategies and to make sure that learning flows from class to class. Teacher-to-teacher
collaboration has a positive effect on student achievement. As I sit back and think on the topic a
great verse in Romans comes to mind. In the verse it says, “For as in one body we have many
members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in
Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given
to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith” (Romans 12:4-6). Teachers should be
all one body. Yes, in a school there are many roles that each person may partake in. Everyone has

different gifts that he or she can minister to one another. However, everyone should come together
as a whole to prosper in the works.
