Video Reflection Assignment .
Describe 3 different strategies the teacher used to facilitate student learning. Explain why
each strategy was effective or ineffective.
a. Throughout the video the teacher would have the kids repeat questions and
answers, which would allow the kids to be engaged but also remember through
repetitiveness. This was an effective strategy at their young age.
b. Another effective strategy from the lesson was the teacher having the kids
whisper the answer to the word of the day into their hands. This helped the kids
also be engaged because it was fun for 6-year-olds. The teacher would also do it
with them so the kids would follow his example.
c. Repeating things back to the teacher allows kids to bring their attention back to
the teacher in the video.
d. The last strategy I noticed throughout the video was when they would break up
into partners and talk about certain things. I do not think this was effective for
teaching because they are too young. The kids will get easily sidetracked,
however, when the teacher would go to each group and talk to them, it helped
them focus a little more when he was in front of them.
If you were teaching this lesson, what would you do differently?
e. If I were to teach this lesson, I would focus on the reading aspect and syllables.
Throughout the video, I noticed that the kids were lost when counting syllables
and reading about past, present, and future. To fix this I would utilize “corrective
instruction in those areas that require correction most… cognitive strategy
instruction in children’s weaknesses can be combined with traditional reading
instruction” (Schunk, 2019). This is educationally advantageous to children at this
age to learn the basics of reading and comprehension because it will prevent the
development of struggles later. I think the way the teacher would engage with the
students was good overall.
Identify a scripture that aligns with the teaching strategies used in this lesson or your
suggestions for improving the lesson. Explain why this scripture is relevant to your
review of the lesson.
f. In Luke 6:40 it says, “The disciple is not above his master: but everyone perfect
shall be as his master.” Setting an example and teaching the first graders is
important especially when correcting them. As the teacher, they will look up to
me and listen to me, especially at a young age. In the strategy I proposed for
teaching them, I must correct them because I am the “master” in this case and the
kids are like my disciples, listening and learning from what I teach them. So,
correcting them is something I need to do for them to succeed.
