EDUC 504: LEARNING THEORY: CASE STUDY - KEVEN
In order to be an effective educator, it is of utmost importance to fully articulate one’s
learning theory so that one can have a guiding force for practice within the classroom. When
there are clear principles established, particularly principles founded upon the Word of God, then
it becomes easier to make decisions that are ethical and effective. In this case study, Keven is a
struggling student. He is doing well in all other subjects besides mathematics. In mathematics, he
has received failing grades previously and continues to be failing presently. An effective
educator for Keven will need to address his off-task behaviors through encouragement of
motivation and patient attention to character development. An effective classroom environment
for Keven will include direct instruction that is systematic and explicit. Furthermore, a classroom
conducive to Keven’s success will leverage technology and behavioral incentives.
Character Development
The case study of Keven states that he shows low motivation in mathematics and in
addition to failing this school year (6 grade), he also failed mathematics in 5 grade. Also,
th th
according to the case study, Keven’s father seemed to be resigned to Keven’s struggle with
mathematics. However, it is important to note that Keven and his family moved several times,
which of course resulted in Keven changing schools several times. Yet, instead of taking that
factor into account, it seems that Keven and his father have accepted that mathematics is an
ingrained struggle for Keven. Furthermore, Keven demonstrates off-task behaviors in class and
even refused to participate in the incentive program for increased participation in mathematics
class. Keven’s low motivation is resulting in a refusal to even participate productively and
attentively in the class.
