VIDEO ANALYSIS TOOL: LONG-TERM RETENTION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
MyEducationLab Chapter 7: The Effective Lesson Video
Topic:
1)After analyzing the teaching video, describe 3 different strategies the teacher used to
facilitate student learning.
The video showed three different teaching strategies that we as educators can use
to asset in student learning. One strategy was authority (lecture style), then there
was demonstrator (coach style), and the last one was hybrid or blended style.
Authority model is done through lengthy lecture sessions in which students are
expected to take notes and absorb this information. The coach style is to have the
educator to take on the formal authority role by showing students what they need
to know. With the demonstrator strategy it is more like a standard lecturer, but can
include multimedia presentations, activities, and demonstrations. The last style
hybrid, or blended style, follows acombined approach to teaching that blends the
teacher’s personality and interests of the students’ needs and what is needed for
their curriculum.
2)Imagine you are teaching a lesson on a topic of your choice. Describe the lesson and
articulate what types of teaching/learning strategies you would use to build long-term
retention and to facilitate learning for the students in your own classroom?
I want to teach History, and most of the time this can fall under the authority
strategy. This will work some times but I want to make a class interesting since
History is usually the boring class of the day, so I don’t want to just take notes
everyday and hope that they retain this information. Having the students become
involved more with projects and what they would like to learn about this subject
would allow students to have interest in the subject and curiosity allows them to
engage in the subject, which in turn would help with them staying motivated
within the subject and want to learn about the subject. With History, I would also
want to use the hybrid strategy, allowing multimedia into the classroom has been
shown to help with the subject at hand,” Though teachers around the country are
using multimedia technology in different ways, the approach is most successful
when it helps students reach existing curriculum goals. As educators create
effective uses for multimedia technology, imagination will be their only limit.”

3)Now consider the biblical approach to education to inform your thoughts on this topic.
Consider a passage of Scripture and/or a fruit of the spirit to support your approach to
implementing these teaching and learning strategies.
Even with secular or Christian a child needs to be taught and be interested in what
is being taught. You want a child to want to learn, and even if they are struggling
or even gifted, each child is a blessing and will benefit from your knowledge.
Being a role model for your students and allowing for change in your classroom
will lead to a successful classroom. Being a Christian shouldn’t stop you from
teaching in a secular classroom either, we all should be able still express our
views and be willing to listen to those of other opiopion. “We cannot and should
not expect everyone to believe what we believe or act the way we act, but where
we have opportunities, we should always champion the Biblical way because it’s
the best way. We should always champion the truth because it’s the
truth.”(website) I leave this passage, for it should be one of the ways teachers
should want to live and teach, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns,
and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (NIV
Colossians 3:16)
