assignment; written
in CPC format
After learning the different attributes that objects can be sorted by Student will be able to
identify all the different attributes that objects can be sorted by with getting 4/5 correct
State Standard K.PS.1 The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data;
organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on
object graphs and picture graphs. a) Sort and classify concrete objects into appropriate
subsets (categories) based on one attribute (e.g., size, shape, color, thickness).

Questions
When trying to think of a digital formative assessment for kindergarten I had trouble
thinking of something that students who are new to reading and learning as well as new
to this technology would be able to do. When searching I did not find anything new to
me that I thought would help but I did find some resources that helped me find new
ideas to bring into the formative assessment. For this tool I chose Kahoot, I found that it
would be the most effective and hands on way for students to do a formative
assessment. I used my unit lesson template and online resources to help guide me in
making questions. I also liked that I was able to use visuals in Kahoot that would help
students who may have trouble reading be able to do their best with what was in the
picture. I only did 5 questions as I feel like this would be a good base to see what they
knew and trying to think of time, fewer questions would not take up too much time in
helping students read and also would not overwhelm them or confuse them.

Answer key:
1. Color
2. Shape
3. thickness
4. size
5.size, color, thickness, shape
Directions for
Students
1. Grab computer/tablet
2. Scan the QR code on the board
3. Enter the code
4. Enter your name when asked
5. Wait until the whole class is logged in
6. Make sure to keep your eyes on your own screen
7. Answer each question to the best of your ability
Data
Collection
At the end of this formative assessment, it gives who the top five were. That will give
the teacher an idea of who is doing good and who may need some help. Each student’s
score will be recorded, each question is worth 6 points. The baseline for this assessment
5
if 4 out of 5. I will go through all of the scores and see which students got less than 4
correct. These students will be a part of the remediation group.

Example feedback statement:
You are doing a great job at figuring out
how a set of objects is sorted. I know
that some of them can be confusing like
size and thickness. These are things that
we are going to work on together in
class and you can work on it at home
with your parents.
Example feedback statement:
Good Morning!
I am emailing to touch base with you on
____’s progress with sorting objects by a
attribute (shape, size, color and thickness).
She is doing a great job with shape and color;
thickness and size tend to be the ones that
confuse her. We will be working on this unit
as a class for the next few weeks and I will be
working with her one on one and in small
groups with manipulatives to help her grasp
these concepts. I will be sending home some
materials and tools that we have used in class
that would be great for her to use at home as
well with you. Thank you for your time and
please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rayner
Remediation
Strategy for a
Struggling
Student
For this student who is struggling I will be taking them back to the basics and being
hands on with the objects. I will give the student a set of objects to sort by themselves.
Getting the students hands on with the manipulatives can help them see what they might
not be able to see on the screen. I will also have the student look at a group of objects
that are already sorted and have them start to identify how they are sorted. Going back
to basics and being hands on helps students touch and feel and be able to connect the
attribute to the objects.
Remediation
Strategy for
the Whole
Class
When the whole class has scored poorly on the formative assessment, we will all go
back to the basics without a screen; each student will have a set of manipulatives, and I
will as well with my camera that shows the students what I am doing. I will tell the class
to sort by one of the attributes. I will be able to walk around the class and see students
touching and feeling the objects and see their thought process when sorting the objects.
Once we have gotten a better handle on sorting objects, I will start to sort them and have
the class figure out how I sorted the objects. The goal for the whole class remediation is
to give them confidence that they know how objects can be sorted and that they can do it
and to get there is to practice over and over.
Reflection
From Your
Student
Date and Time: 9/15 @ 5pm
My practice student scored [5] out of [5] on the assessment. Students did not have any
instruction on this unit prior to taking this formative assessment.
Student feedback:

The student said they enjoyed getting to play a game on the computer and that they
wished it was longer. She said it would be tricky having a lot of answers and not being
able to fully read the answer choices like a kindergartner might have. She would have
liked to have more questions to answer. She said that for her the questions were very
easy but could see how a kindergartner might have trouble and how it could challenge
them. She also suggested asking the question in a different way rather than the same
question every time. I agree with her suggestions and will remember them and use them
going forward.
Self-Reflection
Part 1
I have always wanted to be a teacher so getting to create new things is fun but where I
would like to improve is in my creativity. There are so many different options out there
and sometimes I get stuck on the simple stuff and question what I should do because
there are so many options. And with all of the options I tend to stay within what is easy
or my comfort zone, but I want to take a risk and be creative and think if new ideas that
are fun and engaging.
Self-Reflection
Part 2
In an article I found they did a study on hands-on activities vs. technology. It did not get
to be finished due to covid but the idea behind it is that there are pros and cons to both
activities but when students are learning hands on (Kim, 2022), they tend to grasp a little
bit better than when looking at a screen, this does depend on age but I think it can be
true for a lot of students. I used this information when planning my remediation
strategy. I went away from using the screen to allowing the students to feel the
manipulatives and be hands on and see with their own eyes and hands rather than
looking at a screen.
