All About Me Essay
The NCTM Standards or Common Core State Standards are the basic set of knowledge that
students should know at specific grade levels. Schools are mandated to adhere to the standards
set by their state department of education and their individual districts. Teachers are tasked with
teaching students the specified strands within each standard, and the students are expected to be
successful with testing on the material at regular intervals. The standards within the state that I
live in (Virginia) build upon one another. I believe that there is a place for standards within our
educational system; I wish it did not come at the cost of testing the students so often. The
implications that it has on me as a teacher are that I will be required to provide meaningful
lessons that incorporate the standards and utilize the data provided from the assessments to
realign my teaching methods.
Mathematics is an exact science meaning that there is always a right and wrong answer. I think
that math is like solving puzzles and, in some instances, can be fun. If I can keep that attitude
that math is fun, I will be successful in teaching students how to be successful with math. I have
not always had a love for math; I struggled with math when I was in middle and high school. It
wasn’t until I began working in a sixth-grade classroom that I began enjoying math. I still do not
particularly like complicated algebra, geometry, or other higher-level math, but I like the
challenge of simple math problems.
Math is used and is necessary for our everyday life. We utilize math in everything from cooking,
shopping, doing laundry, and paying bills. Everyone should have an excellent working
knowledge of math to be successful in life. I see math integrated into my Christian life by
ensuring that I tithe a certain percentage of my income to my church to help support their
mission.
