Textbook Reflection: Social & Cognitive Constructivism
Part A – Textbook Information
Read each of the three prompts below and respond by writing one solid paragraph of at least
five sentences. Make sure you use your textbook to support your responses.
1. Discuss at least one experience and/or observation with collaborative and cooperative
learning. Describe the classroom activity that took place with your experience and/or
observation. Explain your viewpoint on this with at least one solid paragraph of five sentences.
[I experience collaborative learning each day that I am in a classroom. Last semester,
during my practicum, the students were working on research for South America. They were
continent detectives. In their guidebooks, they were responsible for finding out famous places,
the climate, the animals, language mainly spoken, and other facts. Back then, I thought this was
such a great idea. The students were able to work together as a team to complete their research

and fine the answers. They also had fun doing it due to the way the assignment was introduced.
Another time, the students were on the rug for part of the lesson and the teacher utilized turn
and talk with a partner. I believe that this is crucial to a child’s development because it allows
them to work on being a great listener and considering another person’s opinion. These are a
few things I will implement into my own room one day.]
2. Explain how social studies teachers should use collaboration to promote creativity and
inquiry in social studies instruction. Explain your viewpoint on this with at least one solid
paragraph of five sentences.
[ There are many opportunities for teachers to use collaborative methods in a social
studies lesson. A teacher can use collaboration via group work for students, meetings with
teachers about possible lesson plans for the school year, field trips, etc. Collaboration can also
promote inspiration depending on the assignment given. By promoting collaboration among
students, it allows students to open their minds up to different opinions from peers. After
reading from our textbook, I was able to gain strong insight on the importance of promoting
collaboration and collaborative relationships and the effects of this on students.]
3. What is the role of questioning and research in these practices? Explain your viewpoint
on this with at least one solid paragraph of five sentences.
[ Social and cognitive constructivism really rely on questioning and research. These two
aspects truly play a major part in social studies. In Chapter 4 of our textbook, it really stresses
how important and crucial for educational development inquiry learning is for students. This
type of learning requires the students to come up with vital questions that requires them to
investigate information to corroborate their solutions. The subject of Social Studies provides
issues that require broad and thorough research. Establishing this foundation for the students to
master the skill of researching topics aids them to gain a deeper level of understanding.]
Part B – Biblical Worldview

Select one of your responses to the prompts above and fully explain your response utilizing a
biblical perspective. Make sure you include a Bible verse and explain how this verse is relevant
to the prompt and supports your biblical perspective. This section should be two solid
paragraphs of five sentences each.
[In my point of view the best way to describe corroboration through a biblical worldview
is to go back and look at how Jesus helped others and compare it to how we can help others as
well. In Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 it states “Two are better than one, because they have a good return
for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how
can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A
cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Bible Gateway). None of us are perfect and we all
need help occasionally. To give help or to receive help from our neighbors around us is a
blessing that should not be overshadowed. God completely expects us to be able to receive help
for others and especially offer help to others around when in need.]
[I would like to carry this forward and utilize it in my classroom. Being able to work with
others to give our students the best chance of learning seems like the exact thing that Jesus
would want us to do just like he spent his time doing. By doing so, we are helping our students
develop and grow their learning needs from hearing the point of view from visitors or peers,
learning opportunities from field trips, and from other teacher’s methods to spread knowledge
and encourage our students. I think one way I can let God sparkle through me is by either
offering my own help to others or asking for help when in need personally. I think it is a great
opportunity for my students and peers to see me live by this. ]
