Title: The Teeny Weeny Unicorn
Author: Shawn Harris
Lexile Level: 2nd
Ideas for
Engagement
Activate Background Knowledge: Students will tell me if they have ever read the book before.
I would ask them how they would feel if someone ever called them too small or not. I would
ask them to tell me how it made them feel.
Vocabulary:
Squinted- to partly close your eyes
Belonged-someone or something is connected to something else
Reading the
text
Stop at pre-determined times during the reading to ask questions or clarify information.
Sticky Notes:
I would stop at the part where the unicorn is getting bullied for being small by his siblings and
talk about hoe it would make them feel if someone called them too small
I would stop at the part when the unicorn ran away and ask them if they thought that running
away from your problems is a good idea.
I would stop at the part where the unicorn accidently steps on the gnome’s car and then goes
to tell his parents and ask them if he made the right decision by telling the truth to his parents.
Book
Discussion
Book Discussion: We would talk about our feeling and how it makes us feel when people
make fun of us. We would talk about the right way to handle it and also the wrong way as
well.
Practice the
Skill
After-Reading Activity: Making Connections- we would talk about our different
feelings and when we would probably feel each feeling.

Part 2 - Personal Reflection
Introduction
I feel that The Teeny Weeny Unicorn is an appropriate book for second grade level. The book
really teaches them about feelings and hoe it is not nice to be bullied especially by your siblings
just for being smaller than them. It teaches them that it is ok to be different than everyone else. It
teaches them that it is ok to just be yourself. It also shows them that when we mess up it is best
to come forward about it rather than hide it. It also has some funny parts in there to help and
keep the story light and relatable for the kids as well.

What Worked Well
I feel that it all would work well. I feel that everything that I have planned out for this read aloud
will be good. I feel that we will have a good discussion on feelings, and it will better help the
kids with their own feelings as well.
What I Would Do Differently in the Future
I do not feel like I would really need to do anything different for this read aloud. I feel that I will
have a better knowledge of what I would do differently after I do the read aloud in the classroom.
It is hard to pinpoint the flaws until you do it in real life.
What the Students Learned
The main goal that would have for this is that the kids first of all learn that reading is fun and is
fun for everyone. I also want them to always look for the lesson that they can learn from every
book that they read. It may not always be easy to see or a lesson that they like but a lesson none
the less. I want them to be able to love themselves for who they are and not try and always fit
into the crowd even when it is hard. I want them to love everything about themselves down to
the smallest detail. I want them to know that all of their feelings are valid, and they own feelings
to feel. They just need to know and learn how to best handle their feelings in each and every
situation that they may face in life.
Conclusion
I feel that this book shows them a very important life lesson about self-love and loving yourself
even though you are different. It also shows a smaller lesson about honesty and being honest
even though you made a mistake. I think that is would be a really fun and interesting read aloud
to do in my classroom one day. I think that my future students would like it and get a good laugh
1
as well. It would also be a good first lesson for me to do with them to kind of get my feet wet the
first couple days of school.
