Engage
Ideas for engagement: To keep students engaged I will first set clear expectations as to what
they should be doing while I am reading. This would include having their eyes on me and
putting their listening ears on. Secondly I would choose a secret listener. Before reading I
would let the students know I have a secret student in mind and if they do a good job listening
as I read, they will get to sit our class “special chair” next time we read a book. This will carry
on all throughout the year so that every student has an opportunity to sit in the “special chair”.
Purpose for Reading: Our purpose for reading today is to discover what the conflict and
resolution is in the book.

Talk About
the Book
Book Discussion: There are a few messages that can be taken away from the text, and I am
going to talk about two with the class. First is that looks do not matter. Despite Corduroy
missing a button, that did not stop the little girl from wanting him. In fact after she bought
Corderoy she took him home and sewed a button on for him, but she said she did this so that he
would be more comfortable. She even told Coredory that she already likes him the way he is.
This is important to remember that when it comes to being friends with people, everyone is
going to look different and that is a good thing. God created us to all be unique. This brings me
to my second point about friendship. Friendship is based on our love for each other, not on what
5
someone has or does not have. Seeing the way the little girl cared for the bear is a
demonstration of how friends can take care of each other. The bear wanted to find someone that
would take care of him which is why he was so happy that the little girl decided to buy him.
Everyone wants to be loved and cherished, it is the way God designed us to be.
Practice the
Skill
Explanation:
Each student will be provided with 3 sticky notes. On each sticky note they will write the
problem, resolution, and something else they learned. Around the room there will be 3 posters
hung up with the 3 categories on the posters. Students will go around the room hanging up their
sticky notes. At the end of the activity all the posters will be full of the students ideas and I will
go around the room reading all the ideas the students wrote.
Classroom-Ready Sample:
Part 2 - Personal Reflection
Introduction -70
The book I chose is called Corduroy by Don Freeman. I chose this book because I
thought it demonstrated a sweet portrayal of friendship and not judging others. Although the
friendship was between a teddy bear and a little girl, it still delivers a strong message of
6
kindness. I also thought that the illustrations and story line would be intriguing for a child to
read, as I was intrigued myself.
What Worked Well -120
I believe my reading aloud of the book itself went well. I was loud and clear in the way I
spoke so that the students could easily understand. I also stopped a lot throughout the book to
talk with the students about what was going on. I would have them turn to their partner to talk or
I would call on students individually to share their thoughts. Before I read I had the students “put
on” their focus goggles and listening ears and I think this was a great way to get them ready to
read. I also believe the activity I chose to help reinforce our skill was a quality choice. It is a
quick and easy activity that does not require too much setting up on my end. Additionally the
kids will enjoy being able to get up and walk around as they participate in the activity.
What Did Not Work -80
I think my introduction could have been more exciting for the kids. Although I did teach
them something new, I should have chosen an introduction that would get them feeling more
excited and involved to read the book. Also I think I should have chosen a different angle to sit at
as I read aloud to the students. Sometimes during the read aloud part of the book got cut out of
the frame because of the way I was sitting.
What I Would Do Differently -177
To make my introduction more exciting next time I would do an interactive activity with
the kids. For this I would have the kids gather on our reading carpet. Then I would have them all
stand up and I would ask them a series of questions. These questions will relate to events that
happen in the book and if their answer is yes they will sit down on the carpet. We will continue
with the questions until every student is sitting down. For example because we are reading
7
Corderoy one of the questions could be “have you ever been to a toy store”? As we read the goal
would be that students would make connections to the activity we just did so that they can feel
like they relate to the story. Additionally to fix the camera angle I would set my camera in a
different position prior to recording and take a few practice videos of reading the book. This
would ensure that as I am holding the book, everything is being captured by the camera.
What I Would Keep the Same -50
Next time I would keep the way I read the book the same. When reading to children it is
important to read with excitement and character. I believe I did a good job reading in this way
and I will continue to try and read that way in future books.
Listener Takeaway
What the Students Learned -60
From the reading I would hope that the students learned more about identifying conflict
and resolution in a story. Students going into the future should be able to read a picture book on
their own and identify the conflict and resolution. Additionally I would hope that they learned
about friendship and how they can be a good friend to others.
Explanation -101
This story is appropriate for 2nd grade students because of the concept of the story.
Although it was a picture book, there was a plot to the story that might be harder for younger
students to understand. 2nd graders also love to read picture books and I think they would really
enjoy the concept of this story. The little girl Lisa in the book is also most likely around their age
based on the drawing of her. Other students can read this book, but to do a deeper study and have
comprehension of it, 2nd grade seems to be most appropriate.

Conclusion
Overall I really enjoyed doing this interactive read aloud. It was a fun process getting to
choose a book and plan a lesson for it. I also loved getting to make a video of myself reading the
book to the students. Currently I am a teachers aide and reading to the students is one of my
favorite things I get to do with them. I look forward to doing this more in the future once I begin
teaching in my own classroom. It feels very satisfying to complete a lesson that you know the
students will enjoy.
