LESSON PREPARATION [before the lesson]
Topic: The germination of seeds. Concept: the process, steps and factors
in seeds growing
Subject: Science Grade: fourth
State Standard

Primary Objective
Each student will demonstrate an understanding of the complete germination process from the
beginning process through each step. They will be able to explain all existing factors in how the
changes occurred from planting the seed until the completed journey of the life of the seed. Each
student will plant their seed in the clear planter in order to observe the changes undergoing the
seed. Each student will draw the stages of growth they observe as they occur.
Materials/Equipment The materials each student will be required to use are notebooks, pencil,
color pencils or crayons, soil, clear potter, seed, watering jug, Macmillan McGraw Hill Science
4 book chapter 6 on germination, and sunlight or incandescent lights for sunlight.

Set
Students will work in pairs of twos. The will each have a notebook, planter, soil, science book,
one water jug per group, pencil, one set of crayons or color pencils per group. The student will
draw or write their documentation of how the germination process occurred. They will discuss
their view on how the growth is progressing as well as classifying what stages of germination the
seed is in by either writing or drawing.
Teacher Instruction
This lesson is to teach the students how seeds germinate and develop into plants that we can use
for food. I t will also teach the agriculture part of sustaining populations food supply how much
effort it takes to care for plants from the initial start from a seed to the final product a full-grown
plant. Students will learn the what the different stages of germination are called and they will be
able to identify the difference between monocot and dicots. This experiment will take about 3
weeks to complete. The students will be able to successfully do research, analyze results and
collaborate with peers.
Teacher Modeling
Teacher will read the process of germination and the different types of seeds from the Science
book chapter on germination. A short video from scishow kids will be shown on How does a seed
become a plant?
Guided Student Practice
A video on Brain Pop called Plant Growth then a game on Brain Pop Build a Plant: Corn
Independent Student Practice
Each group will continue with their measuring growth and the changes in the germination
process. While collaborating with other groups to compare data on how their process is moving
along. Whether they all are growing in the same pace or if there are some differences and if so
they will discuss the differences and elaborate on why there is a difference and how did it
possibly
Closure
Students will gather to the research area and we will discuss what changes has occurred and any
ideas on what they may think happen next. The students will be able to tell the teacher about the
data collected for the day and the teacher will respond accordingly to what phase of germination
they may be in at this point. The last question that will be asked is do they think any changes will
occur tomorrow when they return to class?
Summative Assessment
The students will be given a print out of a seed that has begun its germination process. Each
student will label the parts of the seed that has formed ex. Radicle, seed coat, hypocotyl, and
root. The assignment will be graded by the teacher.
