IV. STANDARDS
1.5 The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have
basic life needs that allow them to survive. Key ideas include
a) animals need air, food, water, shelter, and space (habitat);
b) animals have different physical characteristics that perform specific functions;
and
c) animals can be classified based on a variety of characteristics
V. Objective: Given eighteen animals, each student will be able to identify if the animal is an
herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore with 17/18 correct.
VI. Materials:
- Pre-lesson discussion questions: These questions will be answered during a group
time. There will be four questions that will be discussed during the group time.
Question one: “What foods do you like to eat?” Question two: “Where do you get your
food from?” Question three: “What is your favorite animal?” Question four: “What
kind of foods does your favorite animal like to eat?” The teacher will ask the first
question and then the students will answer it in their groups. After a minute the teacher
will ask each group to name one of their group members’ answer. These questions will
be used to determine what the students already know about the topic.
- Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores, Types of Animals video by Learning Junction:
This video introduces the three types of animal diets. It gives an example of each type
of animal that have that type of diet and physical characteristics such as teeth and
claws.
- Link the Animals worksheet: The students will link the animals on the worksheet with
the diet they eat. This will be the independent practice.
- Omnivore, Carnivore or Herbivore Venn Diagram Sorting Worksheet: The students
will cut and arrange them on the Venn diagram based on if they are an herbivore,
omnivore, or carnivore. This will be the assessment at the end of the lesson. This will
be the assessment
- Scissors: This will be used to cut out the animals for the Venn Diagram
- Glue: This will be used to paste the animals onto the correct section of the Venn
Diagram
- Crayons: These will be used to color the different animals on the worksheet
- Smart Board: The Smart Board will be used to write down the answers provided by the
students, play the video that explains the different types of animal diets, and the Power
Point of different animals.
VII. Technology Connection:
-Smart Board: This will be used to write down the answers the students provide.
-The Smart Board will also be used to play the Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores
video. The video introduces the three types of animals. It gives an example of each type of
animal that have that type of diet and physical characteristics such as teeth and claws
video.

-The Smart Board will be used to play the online sorting game “Please Do Feed the
Animals”. This game requires the students to look at the animal and what they eat.
Afterwards they must decide if the animal is an herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore. Once
they have decided the picture will be dragged to one of the options. If the students get it

right it will say the word “correct” if the animal is dragged to the wrong option it will
bounce back to its original spot and the students will have to try again.
