Abstract
Understanding the dynamics of student motivation and communication in educational
environments is essential for fostering academic achievement and positive classroom behavior.
This paper examines two scholarly sources that explore the roles of internal motivation, external
influences such as the school environment, and communication patterns in shaping student
learning outcomes. The first article by Supratno et al. (2021) highlights how intrinsic and
extrinsic motivational factors, alongside supportive school environments, contribute
significantly to students’ academic success. The second study by Hodis & Hodis (2020)
investigates how different motivation and communication profiles impact engagement and
performance through latent profile analysis. Through summary, critique, personal reflection,
and application, this paper synthesizes findings to better inform instructional strategies and
future teaching practices.
Motivation and Environment: Predictors of Achievement
Summary
The article by Supratno et al. (2021) The influence of student motivation, school environment,
on student learning achievement, investigates the relationship between motivational factors and
the school environment in relation to student academic achievement. The authors aim to
determine how internal and external factors interact to influence learners' academic
performance. The study highlights that both intrinsic motivation (self-driven goals and interests)
and extrinsic motivation (external rewards or recognition) positively impact learning outcomes.
Additionally, a supportive and structured school environment significantly enhances students'
ability to succeed academically. The researchers conclude that the integration of motivation and
a positive school climate plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ achievement levels.
3
Critique
One strength of the article is its thorough analysis of both psychological and environmental
factors, offering a well-rounded perspective. The use of quantitative methods and validated
tools enhances the study's reliability. However, the article mainly emphasizes correlation rather
than causation, which limits the understanding of how specific interventions might impact
outcomes. Additionally, there is minimal discussion of potential cultural or socioeconomic
biases, which could affect how widely the findings apply to different populations or contexts.
Personal Reaction
The findings of the article align with established educational theories, yet they remain
compelling in how clearly they articulate the relationship between motivation, environment,
and achievement. The evidence presented reinforces the belief that student success is not solely
dependent on individual effort but also on systemic support structures. It is not surprising that
motivation and the environment are linked to performance, but the clarity with which these
variables interact provides practical insight.
Application
In educational settings, this research underscores the importance of creating classrooms
that support both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Educators can foster intrinsic motivation by
promoting autonomy, competence, and relevance in the curriculum, while also utilizing praise
and recognition to address extrinsic motivators. Ensuring a safe, inclusive, and structured
environment will also be critical for student growth. These insights can guide future
instructional strategies and school policies aimed at improving academic achievement.
Communication and Motivation Patterns in Learning Environments
4
Summary
Hodis & Hodis (2020) Patterns of motivation and communication in learning environments: A
latent profile analysis examines how distinct motivational and communication profiles among
students affect learning outcomes. Using latent profile analysis, the researchers identify four
unique groups of students based on their levels of motivation (both autonomous and
controlled) and communication behaviors (task-related and socio-emotional). The study
concludes that students with high autonomous motivation and balanced communication skills
perform better academically and are more engaged in learning. The authors argue that
understanding these patterns can help educators tailor interventions that address diverse
student needs more effectively.
Critique
A major strength of the article is its creative use of latent profile analysis, which helps
uncover detailed student groups instead of treating all students the same. The use of multiple
factors also makes the findings stronger and more reliable. However, the study does not include
long-term data to show how these student groups might change over time or with different
teaching methods. Also, because some of the information comes from students' self-reports,
there is a chance for bias, which could affect how accurate the results are.
Personal Reaction
The categorization of learners into specific motivational and communicative profiles was
insightful and offered a fresh perspective on classroom diversity. It was enlightening to consider
how student engagement and communication styles interplay with motivation in shaping
academic behavior. The complexity and specificity of the profiles exceeded initial expectations,
making this research particularly compelling and relevant.
5
Application
Understanding motivational profiles and communication tendencies is essential for
developing differentiated instructional strategies. Teachers can use this information to create
learning experiences that match student needs, offering more structured tasks for students with
lower self-regulation or providing peer collaboration opportunities for those with high
socioemotional communication preferences. This approach can foster more inclusive and
effective learning environments by acknowledging the psychological and social diversity in
classrooms.
Conclusion
The combined insights show that motivation, communication patterns, and environmental
support work together to shape student success. These factors interact dynamically, not in
isolation. Educators must recognize and address them to create effective, inclusive classrooms.
Ongoing research and intentional practice are crucial for supporting all learners and helping
them reach their full academic potential.
