The article “Blogging classroom connects to parents” was written by Emily Athens and
tells of Fred Romer a fifth-grade teacher who used a classroom blog to communicate with
parents. The only difference in this blog, is the fact that the students were the ones posting not
the teacher. Most parents find it hard see what is going on with their children at school every day
or even on a weekly basis and this, too, was one way that helped get the students involved in
letting their parents know what was going on in the classroom. "I liked knowing what was going
on in class, seeing what they were doing, what they were learning, just knowing my daughter
was in a safe place," Schubert said.
The initials thoughts I had on this article were for the families who may not have the
resources at home to participate in this type of communication forum. Then the article went on to
say” Some parents access the blog from the public library, but others never see it at all, he said.
All students, however, still get to participate in the blog, which is updated from the classroom.”
(Athens, Emily). Of course, safety of the students was another concern of mine. The article
stated that their initials were used.
An assignment for this could easily be used in the classroom for older students as you
could split them up into groups and have them produce a blog among themselves and create a
web page either on paper or on Word, producing a topic of interest and telling ways they would
communicate with each other being sure to include safety and those who did not have a computer
at home, etc.
Since I want to teach K5 I think this may be difficult for this age group. Although, a
lesson could include typing simple words or sentences on the computer and making a poster
board at the end of the day of how their day went and allowing each child to take the poster

home on a different day. The class could produce a name for our classroom ‘posterboard blog’
and we could include pictures on it as well.
