Abstract
Teaching is one of the most challenging and stressful professions. The nature of work comes
with many faucets that are completely out of the educator’s control, many of these facets are
student experiences that are brought to class, classroom management and long hours of
managing emotions. After reading the article “The ABC’s of Managing stress” it provides great
strategies on how an educator can deal with the daily stress of the classroom. An educator
juggles different responsibilities when entering a classroom, at times they must be counselors,
hair stylist, authority figures and lastly a role model to each of her/his students. Acknowledging
stress can be a great step to see what needs to change in the classroom, at times the lack of time
given to a teacher to perform a lesson and achieve the goals that have been set up for that
academic year can be difficult for any individual. Which is why it is very important to always
step back and evaluate the strategies that need to be set in motion to complete those goals.
Behavior is the of the main causes of why so many teachers are quitting the classroom. Students
are disengaged and exhibiting serious behavior problems and with district administrators
sometimes offering little support it has become quite difficult to take control back. When reading
the article, it suggests creating a problem solving strategy to decrease high stress, a great strategy
can be a student behavior contract. In the past years research has shown that behavior contracts
can promote a change in individuals’ behavior in any setting because it provides the students
with accountably and independence.
Lastly communication, teachers must be skilled at listening to their students as well as explaining
things clearly. When the educator is stress, it will reflect on the student’s behavior which causes
students to be stress and produce a very chaotic situation. Good communication is essential in the
classroom, an educator with good communication will make things easier and understanding vs
an educator with poor communication will cause for students to fail and not promote in their
academic success. It is important for students to understand what is right and what is wrong
depend fully upon the communication skills the teacher adapts to the classroom.
