Reflection Essay: My Journey With Math
Initial Post
When I think about my journey with math, I don’t just see numbers on a page. I see moments,
people, and emotions. Math has never been just a subject to me; it has been a mix of
excitement, frustration, and growth.
One of my happiest math memories is from third grade. My teacher brought in a pizza to
teach fractions. I’ll never forget the way my classmates’ eyes lit up when she cut it into slices
and said, “This is one-half, this is one-fourth.” For the first time, fractions weren’t scary.
They were delicious! That lesson stuck with me because it showed me that math is
everywhere around us if we just look for it.
Not all my memories are positive. In middle school, math got tough. Algebra felt like a
different language, and I remember staring at the board completely lost. The teacher would
rush through problems, and I sat there too embarrassed to ask questions. I started to believe
the lie so many kids tell themselves: maybe I’m just not a math person. That thought stayed
with me for a long time, and it made math feel heavy.
Then came high school, and things began to shift. I had a teacher who changed everything for
me. He laughed at his own mistakes in class and told us, “If I can mess up, so can you, and
that’s okay.” That simple statement gave me so much freedom. For the first time, I wasn’t
terrified of being wrong. Instead, I started to see mistakes as part of learning. That was a
turning point, not just in how I saw math, but in how I saw myself as a learner.
Now, as I think about becoming a teacher, I carry those experiences with me. I want my
classroom to feel like a safe place where students can take risks, mess up, and try again. I
want them to know that math isn’t about speed or memorizing formulas. It is about thinking,
exploring, and connecting ideas. I want to use real-life examples like pizza for fractions,
sports scores for probability, and money for percentages so my students can see math as part
of their own world.
Most of all, I want my students to feel like math belongs to them. Not just to the “smart kids”
or the fast finishers, but to everyone. If a student leaves my class believing, “I can do this,
even if it’s hard,” then I’ll feel like I’ve done my job.
