This article focuses specifically on increasing physical activity among children in school
in order to prevent obesity. It discusses different types of exercises, organized sports, and
specific programs that children can become involved in to stay healthy. The article also
provides age-appropriate recommendations for physical activity for each age group. For
the purpose of this project, the information regarding elementary school-aged children
will be useful. I also think this article will be useful because it also encourages parents to
limit their children’s television time and Internet usage. It then encourages outdoor play
and physical activity as an alternative. I plan to discuss this in my project.

Part 1 Health and Wellness
This article discusses My Plate, which is a guide for Americans on how to eat healthy.
The plate is divided into four sections: fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins as well as
dairy. It shows the correct food choices and proportions for healthy eating for children
and adults. This article will be helpful and useful for my project because having a
healthy diet is an important part of prevention and intervention of childhood obesity. My
Plate will be used in my project as a guide for schools, teachers, and parents to help their
children be healthy.
Sorte, J., Daeschel, I., & Amador, C. (2014). Nutrition, health, and safety for young children:
Promoting wellness (2nd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.
The course textbook will be a very useful source for my project. Chapter two and three
includes specific challenges to good nutrition at home and ways to overcome them.
These chapters also address obesity and how important healthy eating and physical
activity is for children. It gives examples of what a child needs to be healthy and how to
prevent as well as overcome obesity.

This article will be useful for my project because it discusses many different aspects of
childhood obesity. First, it discusses the causes of obesity and it specifically points out
that most reasons besides genetics are modifiable factors. It then provides specific

prevention and intervention strategies that schools and child-care centers can incorporate.
It also explains in depth what teachers and families can do for their students to be
involved and proactive. This information will be very useful to incorporate in my project
because it will demonstrate exactly what should be done regarding prevention and
intervention by the school, teacher, and family.

This article will be useful for my project because it specifically discusses the negative
effects of childhood obesity. There are many negative effects plaguing America’s
children due to childhood obesity and these effects range from physical to psychosocial.
The article discusses how schools and teachers have great influence and potential to help
rid childhood obesity. This article can be used to show parents why obesity is so
devastating and help them become aware and knowledgeable of the subject. So that in
turn, schools, teachers, and parents can partner together to reduce childhood obesity’s
prevalence.
