I have never been I principal but reading your post gave me a new viewpoint about
leadership roles and the development of school values. I really agree with you regarding
a holistic approach to school culture. I admire the fact that you value and take
ownership of the decision making process within your school.
It must be very difficult to address problems such as homelessness, cultural differences,
trauma within the lives of students, and problems within the community. Since I do not
have an administrative position, I never really thought about these issues from your
perspective. My issues and concerns are more contained but you must think of the
broader picture.
I agree with you about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory as compared to school
culture. If students do not have their basic needs met, it is much harder to teach them
within the classroom.
