This type of portfolio
assessment aligns with
Vygotsky’s theory of the
Zone of Proximal
development. It allows the
teacher and parents to see
the students’ growth and
progress. The student can
use previous knowledge
stored, to help themselves
move along through the
ZPD.
By illustrating the
progression from what the
student can do on their
own to what they can
achieve with assistance,
documenting instances of
scaffolding, reflections,
collaborative projects,
teacher or peer feedback,
and setting goals to
achieve, the ZDP is
exemplified in a student
working portfolio.
