While viewing, Interact: Case Study: PALS: A Reading Strategy for Grades K-1 in the Learn section, describe the PALS strategy
for kindergarten and first grade using the chart below. Write in complete, concise sentences. Include a title page and reference page,
referencing the module according to the directions in the module.
What is PALS?
List 3 Benefits. Three benefits of PALS: Motivate students to be successful, accelerates student
achievement in reading, and allow students to receive corrective feedback. (Iris,
2024)
Describe two
kindergarten PAL
activities.
Two kindergarten PAL activities include: sound play which is teacher led and is
5-10 minutes in length and focus on phonological awareness, and sound and
words which is done by pairing students and is 20 minutes in length which focus
on decoding and word recognition. (Iris, 2024)
Describe two first
grade PALS
activities.
Two first grade PAL activities include: sound and words which is 21 minutes in
length and focus on phonological awareness and decoding, and partner reading
which is 10 minutes in length and focus on fluency and word recognition. (Iris,
2024)
How do you pair
students?
The teachers pair the highest-performing students with the lowest-performing
ones and so forth. The students are paired with the same partner for four weeks
and then paired with another based on performance, social skills, and individual
learning needs. (Iris, 2024)
What is the role of
a “coach” in
PALS?
A coach is a student often in a triad that consist of three students in the event if
the teacher has to create a group if the number of students are an odd number for
that current time.
What is the role of
a “reader” in
PALS?
The coach and the reader is the same, the reader is able to read to the struggling
readers.
What is a floater in
PALS?
The floater is usually a student with average or above reading and social skills
they normally fill in when other students are absent.
How would you
prepare the
materials?
I would prepare my materials based on what we will be focusing on for that week,
for example if we are taking about Independence Day I will have reading
materials, work sheets, game (bingo), and something related to Independence Day
on the computer. I would have stations so that his child have time to rotate during
the day and materials.

What is the
difference between
kindergarten and
first grade training
and
implementation?
The difference between kindergarten and first grade training and implementation
is the level of training. In kindergarten the teacher introduces the lessons with
eight weeks of training which the teacher models the PAL rules, activities, and
correction procedures in a whole-group format. First grader the teacher spends
the first two weeks training the students on PALS. The training will occur four
times a week and last 15-30 minutes. Once the training is complete and students
show progression the teacher introduces partner reading. (Iris, 2024)
How do you
ensure the students
implement the
PALS strategy
correctly and stay
motivated?
I would monitor the student in the pair while moving around the classroom. Give
corrective feedback and remind students to use the correction procedures. I
would give awards such as pencils, pens, and or little note books.
