Meta-Analysis on Math 2
Summary
This study was done to analyze 42 interventions randomly chosen and given instructional
mathematics to help students with learning disabilities but also improve in the classroom and
their performance in mathematics. Each study examines each instructional component. By
examining different approaches to instruction which are formative assessment, formative data,
and feedback for students with learning disabilities, and finally peer assisted mathematics
instruction (Gersten et al., 2009, p. 1202).
Until now, mathematics research was not used with students with learning disabilities
because they were considered an afterthought or not important enough due to their disability. To
prove their point, the authors researched and did a case study between January 1971 and August
2007 (Gersten et al., 2009, p. 1202). Their analysis was done on 2 different case studies with
large groups of students, but in both cases some students' results were inconclusive or came back
for further review.
To make sure that all the students/participate and meet all the requirements and demands
to be in the case study. First, they had to focus on the evaluation and effectiveness of a well-
defined method (Gersten et al., 2009). Then the design of the study (Gersten et al., 2009). All
participants in the study were carefully chosen and selected but also had an identifiable learning
disability. Of course, there were some exceptions. First, they must meet all the qualifications and
expectations. Then they must be focused on more of the quality and design of the case study
(Gersten et al., 2009). Present different variables in their case study like for example grade level,
mathematical domain, size, and how long the intervention itself might last (Gersten et al., 2009).
Finally, operational mathematics is being studied such as fractions, algebra, and word problems
(Gersten et al., 2009).

The teacher then makes it easier for the students by implementing step-by-step plans for
solving problems (Gersten et al., 2009). Then in return the students do the same procedures just
like the teacher showed them. Through the intervention it will help the students with learning
disabilities and show them more than one way to solve a problem. Next, it helps the students to
verbalize within the teacher's instruction if they have any problems or misunderstandings.
Visual representation is needed to instruct students because some students learn better if they are
shown by example. Finally, the case study method also had instructional curricular components
as well (Gersten et al., 2009).
Overall, the study showed that formative assessment data and feedback on students'
performance was more effective. This too helps students with learning disabilities do better
within the classroom. The author also discussed peer-assistance, which will help students with
learning disabilities by giving them that personal attention and the one-on-one help they need.
Analysis Section
The article discusses all five of the instructional components that are especially important
to students with learning disabilities who have problems with math. As mentioned, explicit
instruction is essential to a student's success in math and other instructional components. Also,
when it comes to students learning new material in general, it might be best if teachers have
enough examples so that they can learn by example but also expand on their new skills as well. It
is especially important to have students verbalize their thoughts and opinions too. Especially,
when it comes to new materials or lesson plans so that the students can feel more comfortable
within their learning environment.
Meta-Analysis on Math 4
It is also important for students to feel more comfortable with math. It gives the students
not only the help that they need but gives them feedback on the areas that they might need the
most help in. Feedback is especially important to a student's success because it not only keeps
the student alert with what they are learning but it also gives them a chance to voice their opinion
as well.
Application Section
I thought that this article was highly informative, especially for teachers who have
students with learning disabilities. Math is a hard subject to learn in general. So, it is especially
important that students who have learning issues or difficulties get the best help that they can get.
I also think that this article will help teachers in the classroom become better teachers in math.
Giving students the proper learning and feedback is essential to their success in how well they
will do in math. As an educator, I make sure that my students get the correct understanding but
also the extra help that they need so they can become better mathematicians.
The best math teachers are the ones who verbalize with their students and show visuals
to help them in the classroom. Give their students as much support as possible but also give them
that one-on-one help too. Finally, they will go beyond to make sure that their students are
