This interactive activity is designed for grade 6 students and integrates English Language Arts
(ELA) and science content in a cross-curricular format.
Relevant Standards
Literacy Standard Common Core State Standards (ELA-Literacy, RI.3.1):
“Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to
the text as the basis for the answers.”
This standard supports students in developing reading comprehension skills by requiring
them to engage with informational texts and cite evidence to justify their answers.
Science Standard Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS 3-LS4-3):
“Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat, some organisms can
survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.”
This science standard aligns with the activity’s focus on understanding animal survival
and adaptation across different ecosystems.
Three-Part Learning Objective
Students can read an informative passage about one of three ecosystems (forest, desert, or
ocean), define and apply five science vocabulary words (habitat, ecosystem, adaptation, species,
survival), and write a short paragraph explaining how the animal stays alive in the ecosystem
with at least 85% on a rubric assessing reading comprehension, vocabulary use, and science
integration.

This activity supports the development of a Biblical worldview by emphasizing the
concept of stewardship. Genesis 1:28 states, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and
subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every
living thing that moves on the earth.” From this lesson, students will gain more appreciation for
the design and intent of animal habitats and the fact that they are responsible for taking care of
God's world. The activity promotes the virtue of responsibility since, through the exercise, the
students are taught to preserve and value the world around them, following biblical principles.
Activity Overview
Activity Name: Escape the Habitat!
The sixth-grade students utilize the interactive classroom game Escape the Habitat! as an
escape room on the computer. In this standards-based activity, the students visit three diverse
animal habitats: forest, desert, and ocean. Reading, writing, vocabulary, and science content are
included in the activity, allowing the students to engage in cross-curricular learning through
interactive, hands-on methods.
An escape room can be found on Google Forms and set up as a sequence of related tasks.
Students begin with the reading of short, grade-level informational text that describes the
characteristics of each habitat and the species that inhabit it. Following each reading, students
answer comprehension questions designed to assess their ability to extract key details, make
inferences, and apply contextual knowledge. Students complete each step by unlocking a
challenge or puzzle that moves forward through the activity. The format encourages
independence, digital navigation, and personalized pacing, fostering ownership of learning.
As a culminating activity, students have to write a formal paragraph (3–5 sentences)
explaining how animals might survive in one of the environments they have studied. This writing

activity has students integrate five essential vocabulary words: adaptation, ecosystem, habitat,
species, and survival. This component is designed to promote content knowledge integration
with academic writing, an activity that has been shown to improve comprehension and
strengthen expressive language skills (Duke et al., 2011).
Reading is woven throughout the activity. Each passage focuses on ecological material
and is deliberately scaffolded to address sixth-grade literacy requirements. These readings offer
students some practice with reading comprehension as well as scientific content. The activity
also addresses strategies of nonfiction reading, such as cause and effect, comparison and
contrast, and descriptive text structures.
Vocabulary instruction is infused in all levels of the escape room. Students acquire
essential vocabulary and must define, use, and memorize it via reading comprehension, writing
tasks, and interactive games. According to Nagy and Townsend (2012), instructional academic
vocabulary plays a crucial function in supporting student mastery of literacy and content areas.
The science material is focused on animal survival and adaptation in an ecosystem and is
aligned with NGSS Standard 3-LS4-3. Students learn about how organisms adapt to what is
happening around them and how certain characteristics aid in survival within different
environments. This real-world application of ecological literacy aligns with inquiry-based
science education.
Student learning will be assessed through the following four components:
1. Reading Comprehension (25%) Students will demonstrate understanding of the
habitat texts by answering multiple-choice and short-response questions aligned to
reading standards.

2. Writing Task (35%) Students will compose a short paragraph incorporating all five
vocabulary terms and explaining animal adaptation within a selected habitat. This will be
scored using a rubric assessing clarity, vocabulary usage, organization, and scientific
accuracy.
3. Vocabulary Application (20%) Students will correctly define and apply the assigned
vocabulary terms throughout the activity, demonstrating both conceptual understanding
and appropriate usage.
4. Escape Room Completion (20%) Students must successfully solve the sequence of
escape room challenges and submit all required components with a minimum of 85%
accuracy to receive full credit.
Engagement and Motivation Strategies
Escape the Habitat! The activity is explicitly designed to engage and motivate students
by applying research-based instruction. Engagement and motivation are related but different
terms to explain how they help facilitate the learning process (Skinner & Pitzer, 2012).
Engagement refers to the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive investment of students in learning
activities, while motivation is the internal mechanism that prompts students to initiate, sustain,
and persist in the effort to learn.
To foster engagement, the activity will have an interactive escape room design created
with Google Forms. This virtual infrastructure will present students with a sequence of
multimedia activities that integrate reading, writing, vocabulary, and science content. As they
move through habitat-related challenges, students will find themselves in a virtual environment
that requires them to make choices, solve mysteries, and open segments of the activity. These
components will enhance cognitive and affective engagement by fostering curiosity and

maintaining student engagement. Puentedura's SAMR model is based on the idea that
substituting worksheets with interactive computer-based activities increases engagement by
altering the learning process (Puentedura, 2014). The feeling of mystery—"getting away" from
each setting—will keep students behaviorally engaged during the activity.
To further increase motivation, the lesson will incorporate gamification strategies like a
points reward system, virtual "badges," and monitoring progress. As they complete each section
of the escape room—reading comprehension exercises, vocabulary exercises, and writing
exercises—the students will receive immediate feedback and earn "escape points." These
external rewards will evoke intrinsic motivation by creating competence and a sense of
achievement. Deterding et al. (2011) point out that gamification, when it empowers autonomy,
mastery, and purpose, enhances learners' intrinsic motivation and effort. Students will be
motivated to continue working through the activity not only for reward, but because they will
feel a sense of purpose in completing meaningful, achievable tasks. With the addition of
interactive digital engagement and motivational elements, Escape the Habitat! Will establish a
classroom atmosphere where students are cognitively challenged, emotionally invested, and
behaviorally engaged in learning. The strategy combined will maximize deep learning and
student accomplishment.

learn how animals survive in their environment. Follow the steps below carefully and complete

1. Choose Your Habitat:
Begin by selecting one of the three habitats in the escape room: forest, desert, or ocean.
Click the corresponding link to enter that habitat’s escape room section.
2. Read the Passage:
Carefully read the short informational text about the habitat you selected. Pay close
attention to details about animals, plant life, climate, and adaptations.
3. Answer Comprehension Questions:
After reading, answer the questions based on the passage. These will test your
understanding of the habitat’s features and the survival needs of the animals.
4. Define Key Vocabulary:
You will be given five important science terms: adaptation, ecosystem, habitat, species,
and survival. Write definitions for each word and use them in complete sentences that
relate to the habitat you studied.
5. Write Your Paragraph:
Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) explaining how an animal of your choice
survives in that habitat. Use all five vocabulary terms in your response.
6. Solve the Final Puzzle:
Use the clues you’ve gathered to complete the final puzzle and unlock the escape room.
Submit your responses through the Google Form to complete the challenge.
