Introduction/ Topic
For one of my articles, I wanted the first article to focus on the language arts of reading.
Therefore, I decided to choose this article from the Jerry Falwell Library called “A
Metaregression Analysis of the Effects of School Racial and Ethnic Composition on K-12
Reading, Language Arts, and English Outcomes” (DOI: 10.1177/2332649220942265), written
by Mickelson, Bottia, and Larimore. When looking into the major objective of this article/
journal, the major goal is to determine the relationship between the racial and ethnic composition
of schools and the academic outcomes of k-12 students in reading, language arts, and English.
Some of the minor objectives within the article were to review and synthesize existing research
on this topic, to use metaregression analysis to quantify the effects of school composition on
academic outcomes, and finally, to identify any patterns or trends within the data that could
inform the educational policy and practices (Mickelson et al., 2020). After reading the article,
there were some major concepts that I noticed that were focused on the author for example, the
concept of metraregression analysis was shown throughout the article. For example, this concept
was defined as the statistical technique that is used to study characteristics and research findings
on multiple different studies (Mickelson et al., 2020). Another major concept I noticed the author
focused on was racial and ethnic composition. For example, the authors defined this as the
demographic makeup of a school’s student body in terms of race and ethnicity (Mickelson et al.,
2020). Finally, the last major concept I noticed the author focuses on within this paper would
have to be academic outcomes. For example, it was shown different measures of student
performance in reading, language arts, and English (usually assessed within standardized test
scores/grades) (Mickelson et al., 2020). Within this paper, I do believe that the definitions

provided by the authors are clear and was extremely well explained enough for myself to
understand the study’s focus.
Summary
The article conducts a metaregression analysis to investigate how the racial and ethnic
composition of schools influences K-12 students’ performances within the reading, language arts,
and English subjects. Within this article, the authors argue that the demographic makeup of a
school can significantly impact academic outcomes, with implications for educational policy and
equity (Mickelson et al., 2020). Throughout the article, there were amazing supporting
arguments such as the analysis consisting of multiple studies that reveal consistent patterns that
do show that racially and ethnically diverse schools tend to have better academic outcomes for
all students (Mickelson et al., 2020). In addition, the article also showed that socioeconomic
factors often intersect with racial and ethnic composition, further influencing student
performance. Finally, the authors also provided a supporting argument by talking about how
policies promoting school diversity can enhance educational equity and improve academic
outcomes. When regarding if the ideas are clearly presented, I would have to say yes because the
authors do an amazing job at explaining their methodology, findings, and all the implications for
their research.
Conclusions
Regarding conclusions, the authors do conclude that the racial and ethnic composition of
schools has a significant impact on student outcomes in reading, language arts, and English.
They suggest that promoting diversity in schools can lead to improved academic performance
and greater educational equity (Mickelson et al., 2020). As my critique, I think that the article
does an amazing job at demonstrating the relationship between school composition and academic

outcomes through a diligent analysis. The conclusions are well supported by the data and
arguments presented throughout the whole article and are very clear. However, I do believe that
further research could explore more of the underlying mechanisms in more detail and address
potential limits within the data.
Reflection
When regarding if I think the data supports the conclusions being made by the authors, I
will have to agree and say yes. The reason is that the use of metaregression talked about in the
article provides strong evidence of the relationship between school composition and academic
outcomes (Mickelson et al., 2020) .In addition, I think the results are in fact thought-provoking. I
believe that they highlight the importance of school diversity and its potential benefits for student
achievement, prompting further consideration of educational policies. To think about how or
what could be done to improve research, I think there could be more of a detailed examination of
the mechanisms behind the observed effects could be conducted. In addition, I think the
longitude of the studies could be deeper insights into how changes in school composition over
time affect/ impact student outcomes. Within this article, I would have to say that the most
important takeaway is the significant impact that school racial and ethnic composition can
actually have on academic outcomes (which I still haven’t decided whether or not that is a
surprise to me), emphasizing the need for policies that promote diversity and equity in education.
Article #2- Introduction/ Topic
For my second article, I wanted to choose an article that focuses on the concept of
writing. Therefore, I chose this article from the Jerry Falwell Library and it is called
“Investigating high schoolers’ L2 writing anxiety, L2 writing self-efficacy, L2 writing self-regulated
strategies, and L2 writing engagement: Relationships and Mediator” (DOI:

10.3389/fpsyg.2022.1012407), by Jie Zhou, Shusheng Wang, and Junju Wang. For my second
article review, I decided to choose the topic of writing within language arts. The second article I
also got from the Jerry Falwell Library here at Liberty University and the I chose is “
Investigating high schoolers’ L2 writing anxiety, L2 writing self-efficacy, L2 writing self-regulated
Strategies, and L2 writing engagement: Relationships and mediator” (DOI:
10.3389/fpsyg.2022.1012407) by Jie Zhou, Shusheng Wang, and Junju Wang. This article talks
about the relationships between high school students’ anxiety, self-efficacy, self-regulated
strategies, and engagement in second-language writing. When looking at the major objectives of
this article, I would have to say it would be for the goal of investigating the teamwork between
L2 writing anxiety, self-efficacy, self-regulated strategies, and self-engagement among high
school students (Zhou et al., 2022). When regarding the minor objectives, one of them would be
to identify the levels of L2 writing anxiety and self-efficacy among high school students. Another
minor objective would be to analyze how self-regulated strategies influence L2 writing
engagement (Zhou et al., 2022). Finally, one of the last minor objectives that I understood was to
examine if self-efficacy acts as a mediator between writing anxiety and writing engagement.
Throughout the article, I have identified some major concepts that were focused on by the
authors. For example, there was writing anxiety, which is the feeling on tension specifically
associated with writing in a second language. The next concept was L2 writing self-efficacy,
which I understood as the belief in one’s capability to successfully be able to do writing tasks in
a second language. Another concept I understood was L writing self-regulated strategies, which I
took as techniques and methods that students use to manage their writing process. And finally,
L2 writing engagement, which I understood as the level of interest, motivation, and effort that a

student will put into their writing in a second language (Zhou et al., 2022). I believe that these
definitions do provide a clear and essential for understanding of the study’s context and findings.
Main Ideas/ Summary
When understanding what this article is all about, the article is about an investigation of
the relationships between high school students’ L2 writing anxiety, self-efficacy, self-regulated
strategies, and engagement (Zhou et al., 2022). I think the authors do aim to understand how
these factors listed above interact and influence one another, and whether self-efficacy serves as
a middleman in these relationships. Some of the supporting arguments that I noticed within this
article would be that higher levels of L2 writing anxiety negatively affect students’ writing
engagement (Zhou et al., 2022). In addition, another supporting argument that I noticed
throughout the article is that L2 writing self-efficacy positively influences both self-regulated
strategies and writing engagement (Zhou et al., 2022). Finally, the last supporting argument that I
followed within this article was that self-efficacy mediates the relationship between writing
anxiety and writing engagement, suggesting that increasing self-efficacy can reduce the negative
impact of anxiety (Zhou et al., 2022). When regarding if these ideas are clearly presented, I
would have to fully agree that the ideas are in fact clearly presented. The authors do an amazing
job of explaining their hypothesis, methodology, and findings in a clear manner.
Conclusions
The authors conclude that L2 writing self-efficacy is a crucial factor that can reduce the
negative effects of writing anxiety and enhance writing engagement, The authors suggest that
interventions aimed at increasing self-efficacy and teaching self-regulation strategies could
improve students’ L2 writing outcomes. As my critique, I believe that the article effectively
demonstrates the complex relationships between L2 writing anxiety, self-efficacy, self-regulated

strategies, and engagement. The conclusions are supported by the data and the findings are
relevant to educational practice. However, I do believe that future research could have explored
these relationships in different contexts and larger samples.
Reflection
As we are closing out with my reflection when asked if I believe if the data supports the
conclusions being made by the authors, I will have to say yes. The study's findings are consistent
with the proposed relationships and mediator effects. I do also agree that the results are thought-
provoking because they highlight the importance of self-efficacy and self-regulated strategies in
lightening anxiety and promoting engagement in L2 writing. As to what I think could be done to
improve research, I think that there could definitely be a more diverse sample of students from
various educational backgrounds that could have been studied. Additionally, I believe that the
longitude; studies could provide more insights into how these relationships evolve over time.
Finally, I think the most important takeaway is the significant role of self-efficacy in influencing
L2 writing anxiety and engagement. This emphasizes the need for educational strategies that can
boost students’ confidence in their L2 writing abilities.
