Primary Diagnostic Impression
303.90 F10.20 Alcohol Use Disorder, Severe, with Alcohol
Intoxication
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM), 5th
edition refers to alcohol use disorder as a “problematic pattern of alcohol use
leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by two
or more characteristics occurring within a twelve- month period” (APA, 2013,

p. 233). Marci presents behaviors and symptoms consistent with the
following characteristics;
1. Alcohol is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer
period than was intended. Marci has admitted to drinking two to
three glasses of wine nearly every night during the week for the past
two months. Marci also admitted to going on weekend binges
(beginning on Friday evening).
3. A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain
alcohol, use alcohol, or recover from its effects. Marci exhibits
behaviors that are indicative of alcohol overuse and misuse. Marci
