Research Purpose
The purpose of the research is to be able to evaluate the enVisions mathematics
curriculum to see how it aligns with the North Carolina second grade operations and algebraic
thinking standard that address math fact fluency and report my findings to the other teachers. An
evaluation of the curriculum and my findings will provide myself and other teachers with
knowledge about the alignment of the enVisions mathematics curriculum with North Carolina
second grade operations and algebraic thinking standard that address math fact fluency.
Annotated Bibliography
1. Describe your first source, including the following:
Crawford, D. B., & Snider, V. E. (2000). Effective mathematics instruction: the importance of curriculum.
Education & Treatment of Children (ETC), 23(2), 122–142.%
oThis is a peer reviewed research article published in Education and Treatment of
Children.
oThis source is relevant to my proposed capstone research purpose because it is
comparing the effectiveness of two math that follows the same structure and
organization as the curriculum I will be evaluating for my capstone. This study
looked at two math curriculums and the effects instruction for both had on
students’ performance on different math areas on standardized test.
oThe study found that students who were taught with one curriculum outperformed
students that were taught with the other curriculum on curriculum-based test,
however there was no difference with students’ performance on pretest for each
curriculum. The study also found and noted that curriculum is big factor in
student achievement.

oA strength to this article is that it will provide me with a lot of valuable
information to use when evaluating enVision Mathematics, and a weakness
specific to the source is that it has a lot of research terminology that I don’t
understand in its findings, as well as the study being directed toward the
evaluation of fourth grade math curriculums.
2. Describe your second source, including the following:
Poncy, B., Fontenelle, S., & Skinner, C. (2013). Using Detect, Practice, and Repair (DPR) to
Differentiate and Individualize Math Fact Instruction in a Class-Wide Setting. Journal of
Behavioral Education, 22(3), 211–228. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-013-9171-7
•@@This is a peer reviewed research article published in Learning Disabilities Research &
Practice.
•@@This source is relevant to my proposed capstone research purpose because it will allow
me to see how the evaluation of two math curriculums align to mathematics practices
standards, in turn helping me use the related information in the article to evaluate the
curriculum I will be using for my capstone research.
•@@The study found that there is a gap between core instruction and intervention, and that
core and intervention teachers need to collaborate to ensure that math instruction is
aligned for students that need support. The study also found that one of the math
curriculums and interventions programs outscored the other intervention program in
mathematics practice standards.
•@@A strength to this article is that the study is examining elementary mathematics
intervention and core instruction programs, and a weakness specific to the source is
that there were limitations and a need for future research.
3. Describe your third source, including the following:
4
Pulles, S. M., & Burns, M. K. (2022). Alignment of K‐8 mathematics interventions with strands
of mathematical proficiency in meta‐analytic research.@Psychology in the Schools,@59(6),
1192–1208. https://doi.org/10.1002/pits.22676
•@@This is a peer reviewed research article published in Psychology in the Schools.
•@@This source is relevant to my proposed capstone research purpose because it is
evaluating how math interventions align with the strands of mathematical proficiency,
and my proposed capstone research purpose is to evaluate the operations and algebraic
thinking standard in the curriculum that I use to see if it aligns with the state standard.
In my viewing of this study, I will be able to see if the curriculum that I am evaluating
is aligned to the strands of mathematical proficiency and the state standard for
operations and algebraic thinking.
•@@The study found that some interventions did not align with the strands of mathematical
proficiency, and was able to pinpoint which strands the interventions did not align to.
•@@A strength to this article is that it was able to identify which strands were evident in the
interventions aligned to the strands of mathematical proficiency and a weakness
specific to the source is that their limitations and the study used criterion targeting
variations of certain words.
4. Describe your fourth source, including the following:
Ruiz, C., & Balbi, A. (2019). The effects of teaching mental calculation in the development of
mathematical abilities. Journal of Educational Research, 112(3), 315–326.
https://doi.org/10.1080/00220671.2018.1519689
•@@This is a peer reviewed research article published in the Journal of Educational
Research.
5
•@@This source is relevant to my proposed capstone research purpose because it is talking
about math fact fluency, and that directly relates to the standard that I will be
evaluating for my proposed capstone research.
•@@The study found that intervention is effective to develop computational fluency for
second graders.
•@@A strength to this article is it is dealing with mental calculations and math fluency of
second graders as the standard and curriculum I am evaluating is for second grade. A
weakness specific to the source is that more research is needed on the teaching of
mental calculation (fluency) in different countries.
5. Describe your fifth source, including the following:
Sawchuk, S. (2023). Kids Need to Know Their Math Facts. What Schools Can Do to Help.
Education Week, 42(32), 4–7.
•@@This is a peer reviewed research article published in Education Week.
•@@This source is relevant to my proposed capstone research purpose because it focuses on
the importance of developing mathematics fluency and that directly relates to the
standard that I will be evaluating within the curriculum I will use for my proposed
capstone research.
•@@The article gave helpful information on the importance of developing math fluency and
effective strategies to use to teach fluency.
•@@A strength to this article is it explores strategies used to effectively teach math facts. and
a weakness specific to the source is that is not an actual study that had findings.
Summary of Common Themes
6
Curricular alignment to mathematics practice standards and Fact fluency instruction are
two of the most common themes among my sources. Three of the sources are directly related to
the align of math curriculums to mathematics practice standards, in which my proposed capstone
research purpose is to see how the math curriculum I use is aligned to the state standard for
operations and algebraic thinking. The three sources will provide me with information on how to
evaluate the curriculum and the operations and algebraic thinking standard within the curriculum
to see how it aligns to the state standard. The other two sources focus on fact fluency instruction
in which the standard I will be evaluating within the curriculum deals directly with fact fluency
so these articles will provide me with information on how the curriculum instruct teachers to
teach fact fluency and if I see any difference among the sources and the curriculum, and how it
all relates to the algin of the curriculum to the state standard.
