Moral and Legal Issues in School Policy
Part A: Policy Include the actual policy in regards to Moral & Legal Implications
Student use of electronic
communication devices
and social media
Greensville County Public schools’ current policy outlines acceptable use of
electronic communication devices and social media by students both on and off
school property. This includes guidelines for behavior online and for student-
created content. The policy also provides information on potential consequences
for violations of the policy.
Narrative Analyzing the Policy in Regards to Moral & Legal Implications
The policy regarding student use of electronic communication devices and social media has a significant
potential for moral and legal implications. Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to foster
communication, dialogue, and learning among students. However, inappropriate or harmful behavior and
content can quickly lead to moral and legal problems. Cyberbullying is a major concern for schools, and
social media can be used to facilitate this behavior. The policy should provide clear and specific guidelines
to prevent cyberbullying and harassment, along with appropriate consequences for violations.
The policy should also ensure the protection of student privacy and confidentiality. Students should be
aware of what types of online behavior are acceptable and what privacy rights they have when interacting
with others online. Additionally, the policy should address how to deal with personal information that is
shared on social media, including information about students, staff, and the school. The policy should
specify how to report and handle instances of online harassment or inappropriate behavior, and how to
balance the rights of free speech and expression with the needs of the school community.

Critique of Current Policy
The current policy on student use of electronic communication devices and
social media is a good starting point, however, it could be clearer and more
specific in terms of social justice and the values of equity, confidentiality,
acceptance, and respect. The policy should seek to protect and promote these
values in order to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for all
students.
Amending the Policy In order to avoid potential litigation and uphold values of social justice and
equity, the school should consider revising the policy to include specific
guidance on how to prevent cyberbullying and harassment, how to respect
student privacy and confidentiality online, and how to balance free speech
with the needs of the school community. The policy should emphasize the
importance of inclusion, acceptance, and respect for diverse viewpoints and
backgrounds. The school could also consider offering educational programs

for both students and staff on digital ethics and responsible use of
technology, as well as internet safety and online etiquette.
Upholding Values in the Face of Adversity
The school should remain vigilant in enforcing the policy on electronic communication devices and social
media, and take appropriate action when violations occur. It is also essential to provide support to students
who have been victimized by cyberbullying or harassment, ensuring that they feel safe and welcome in the
school community. By consistently promoting and upholding these values, the school will create a positive
and inclusive learning environment that benefits all students.
