Review:
Mr. and Mrs. Balswick are authors that present their readers with a full circle perspective of the
issues that are currently bombarding the Christian home in today’s society. They leave no stone
unturned, as they speak on marriage, sexuality, family, and so many other topics that we as
Christians are not exempt from. Holding to both principles and promises are one of those tools
to imprint upon their children. This particular source will enable me as the writer to obtain a
different perspective on how such topics are handled by season professors and parents.

Just as author Stephens writer of “Family Matters”, author Dowland presents a political and
religion infused approach. Here there is no separation of church and state, as separating the
two will be the demise of the nation. Dowland present the argument that the free spirited
perspective that engulf the society will be the downfall of us all. This is why he believes that
there must be private Christian school, the banning of gay rights, the demolishing of various
laws that support abortion, and how evangelist must stand their ground against the dark forces
the world presents. Some view this approach to not be founded or rooted within Christian
principles but Dowland argues differently.

Through thorough research, author Kathleen Jenkins uncovered the strong attraction the middle
and upper middle class families had to the the principles that are embedded within the Church of
God in Christ religious group. Due to heavy community involvement, explicit authoritative
relationships, as well as therapeutic ideals, individuals within the above mentioned social
classes found the Church of God in Christ ministry offered the very same values and principles
they shared. Within Jenkins’ research readers will find that the principles of this religious group
showed to be unstable and ineffective, as these principles were focused more on man’s law and
not solely the teachings of Christ. Ultimately, studies show the crumbling of family foundations.

Here is an author that take a completely different approach. Hilde Stephens was look to as an
expert on the Evangelical American Christian family. He infused his Christian principles with
his political views, making him a sought after resource during the Reagan administration.
According to author Stephens, it was the duty of the evangelical Americans to safeguard other
evangelicals from the corruptions that plaques our society. Stephen speaks on how Christian
principles are being threaten by things such as media, gay rights, feminism, abortion,
secularization within public schools. This was war that Stephens felt needed to be fought during
the 1970s to 1980s.

The authors of, “Parenting From Your Strengths” seek to show readers a more harmonious
approach to parenting. Meaning, this selected reading conveys how to parent from a place of
love, heading off conflicts, and ensure that both the parent and child are consistently on the same
page. This requires both effective listening and effective communications. Understanding that
everyone should be heard in order for their to be a strong relationship. Tooled, Trent, and Cox
introduce to reader their GPP (Global Parenting Plan) approach. The GPP assist both the
church and parents with disciplining youth according to Christ. The authors believe that there
are three perspectives that will produce strong foundations within children that can combat the
competition of the world around us. Those three perspectives are God’s unchanging Word,
unique parenting strengths, and the uniqueness Christ has made each child. “By drawing on
these three factors parents can not only draw closer to each other, but can be even more effective
in training up a child in their own unique bent."
