Self-Worth
The idea of self-worth is an idea that begins at home with the parents. That is, with the
proper use of parental influence and direction (Dobson, J., 2015). It is with that properly
influenced guidance, we can provide our children with that inner strength that will help them to
conquer the world to be the best them that they can possibly be.
As parents there are some things we may or may not do to help build-up our children’s
self-worth. For example, we might tell our children that they are the most beautiful or handsome,
they are the smartest, or can sing better than all the other children their age. In my own opinion,
there is nothing wrong with any of that. Everything can be a good thing, in moderation that is.
Yes, we want our children to be comfortable in the skin they are in, but what we do not want is a
bunch of conceited, self-entitled hooligans running around.
We also need to teach our kids kindness, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and patience are all
virtues that we all should hold in our hearts (Dobson, J., 2015). “Don’t judge by a man’s face or
height for this is not the one. I don’t make decisions the way you do! Men judge by outward
appearance, but I look at a man’s thoughts and intentions” (1 Samuel 16:7 TLB). This is the
perfect piece of scripture to use when teaching children not to be so quick to judge others by
their appearance. Kids are the worst at quickly spouting off the first thing that pops into their tiny
little minds exactly what they think!
