After reading “Three Undocumented Layers of the OSI Model and Their Impact on
Security,” I have determined that the 7 layer model does not represent the significance that the
Bible give the number 7. As Russ White puts it in his article “The Seven Layer Model Is Dead”
The seven layer model was not designed to be the end-all model for network operations. Seven
was not a magical number. The model was designed to allow adding more layers as needed, over
time.” How can we put so much faith in a system that was put in place in the 1970’s? With the
evolution of technology came different ways to do different things such as “driving everything
through a single port in order to get around middle boxes.” (Russ, 2014)
If the 7 layer OSI model was intended to be added to why would we believe that it is
complete, and if it is not complete how could we consider it to be the perfect solution? I do
believe that the 7 layer OSI model has a great basis, however, I believe it should be expanded.
The hidden layers located in the 7 layer OSI model hold the most severe security risks. If
the 7 layer OSI model was in fact perfect and complete there would not be such severe security
risks. Expanding the model in some way would at least bring light to these security risks, and
allow for more understanding of the reason there are risks involved.
