History of Processors
Processors are a huge part of what makes computers run. We rely on these processors in
our daily lives as they are found in many different devices, such as computers, phones, cars and
more. If there is a computer involved, a processor is also involved. A processor is the portion of
a computer that , “provides the instructions and processing power the computer needs to do its
work. The more powerful and updated your processor, the faster your computer can complete its
tasks” (Ram vs. processor-which is more important to your business?).
By getting a more powerful processor, you can help your computer think and work faster.
For different types of computing however, certain processors are needed. Business
computing is a type of computing that works better for businesses than normal computing.
Businesses sometimes need better computers or need more than what a household might. So with
businesses and their needs, you have to make sure that you have a processor that can keep up.
We’re gonna look into the two biggest computer processor brands and see which one is better
suited for business computing.
AMD and Intel Processors
Intel has been around for more than 50 years. The first Intel processor came out in the
1970’s. This was the first electronically programmable microprocessor in the world (Explore
Intel's history). Over the years they expanded their processes and with that, their processors
became more advanced. We would end up seeing Intel Processors being used in the first personal
computers as well as newer and better processors coming out. In the 1980s, these processors
would be in a few different types of computers. By the time the World Wide Web opened to the
public, Intel had about 9-10 processors out in computers. Intel processors contain a video
component which allows for better office use as well as gaming and general use.They do not
have a cooling component which AMD processors contain.
AMD, or Advanced Micro Devices, started in 1969 and started making processors in
1972. In 1991, they released their own microprocessor, the AM386 (History of AMD: Timeline
and facts - thestreet). This chip ended up causing a legal battle between the two companies as the
chip AMD created was similar to an Intel chip. Further down the line, in 2009, Intel and AMD
had another confrontation, this time leading to a 1.5 billion dollar fine for violation of antitrust
laws. “AMD let go of the case in 2009, when Intel agreed to pay $1.5 billion to AMD, and a
mutual agreement over a fight for patents over chips.”(History of AMD: Timeline and facts -
thestreet), AMD still is Intel’s rival. AMD did however win some people over with their Ryzen
chip in recent years.
A Comparison
Now that we’ve looked into the two different companies, which has the better computer
processor for business computing? While both companies have their strengths, the choice
depends on what someone needs to be able to do business computing. Intel has more history of
processors and more developments than AMD. They have a proven track record of reliability.
AMD processors are also known for being reliable over the years, however, for heavier tasks, the
AMD Ryzen may be able to handle the workload due to its higher core counts (AMD Ryzen™
Processors for desktops).
"AMD Ryzen™, Ryzen™ PRO, and Ryzen™ Threadripper™ processors offer leadership
performance, exceptional battery life, and modern security features" (AMD business processors
vs. Intel).
“Ryzen Threadripper chips are for creative professionals who need tremendous power for high-
core count applications like video editing and rendering.” (AMD vs Intel: HP® Tech takes). Intel
chips, however, have smaller core counts but have more generations of different kinds of chips.
Intel chips are used in a lot of different laptops. “it is more common to find laptops with Intel
processors of various generations, often combined with integrated graphics.”(AMD vs Intel:
HP® Tech takes). A downside to Intel is that their chips are a bit more expensive. The cause of
the difference in expense is likely due to supply and demand. This may be due to the amount of
kilowatts each draws and the efficiency of the processor. This adds to the electricity costs as well
as performance.
Opinion
As to what chip would be the better choice, it honestly doesn't matter except for what the
business or person needs to do their computing. If they need a processor that's better for video
editing or graphic/digital art, the AMD Ryzen is a better choice. This would be due to the
amount of electricity it draws upon for performance and how efficiently it works. However, if it's
more for other regular day to day computing, the Intel chip might be better. It is fast and
efficient. I think it all depends on what the person or consumer is looking for. If it was for me, I
probably would go with the Intel processor as I tend to use a laptop for most things. I find
laptops more convenient and most laptops have Intel chips.
Summary
In conclusion, both companies and their processors are well suited for different purposes.
What's best depends on what a business or consumer may need in the end. Both companies are
reputable and seem to provide high quality processors. It's a matter of preference for the
consumer and what they want for processing speed and capabilities.
