Rescuing Innocence
A natural catastrophe is never supposed to happen to you. It’s something seen on
television that others watch in amazement, praying that everyone involved gets out safely. Vince
wasn’t ready for what he was about to endure, watching a catastrophic mudslide on television is
nothing, compared to seeing the aftermath in person. It began as a normal Wednesday.
The spring weather was just coming into effect and just as the flowers were blooming, the
rain seemed to come pouring in, drowning out the light of spring. Any rescue personnel can
explain their job isn’t an easy one, but saving lives is what drives them to keep going. Vince was
no different, and after the horrendous mudslide occurred, his main goal was to get out as many
people and animals as possible.
The digging began around noon after a waterlogged hillside caved in above the river. The
mud roared over the riverbanks and across the highway, engaging over two dozen homes on the
outskirts of town. Some began to use hand tools while others were using machinery to clear the
debris and search for the missing. Vince was using hand tools because he wanted to take care of
matters in a more cautious manner. He knew that they had were people that had yet to be
discovered and they were his main concern.
The search was becoming more hectic and the site was very loud due to the machinery.
However, Vince could hear a faint but distinct noise from the distance. He decided to follow the
noise and find the source. He began to truck through the mud sinking further with every step he
took, but he was determined to get to the noise. Finally when he approached the noise he was
quickly freaking out. There was a little boy buried completely underneath the mud only leaving
his head up for air. The only problem was with the mud was crashing his lungs and starting to
dry over him very quickly.
The boy began to cry out for help and attempting to scream, “Help!”
The boy was shortly running out of breath and couldn’t talk very much.
Vince stated, “I’ll get you out, just calm down little man you’re going to be okay.”
Vince began to dig quickly but cautiously and when he saw another rescuer he yelled for to have
paramedics ready right away. When the paramedics finally approached Vince and the little boy
they began to help him as quickly as they could.
Vince finally retrieved the little boy but when he did he passed out because the mud had
already crushed his ribs. The little boy was so weak his body couldn’t handle it anymore, and
stopped breathing. The paramedics began mouth to mouth CPR but tried to be as gentle on his
lungs and ribs as possible but they were just worried about bringing him back to life. After two
minutes of CPR the little boy gasped for air.
Vince was thrilled with excitement after the boy started breathing again. He realized
that’s exactly why he loved his job. He knew that sometimes the smells were unbearable and that
the sites he witnessed were hard to see, but all in all he loved to help. Vince loved the adrenaline
of saving a life and helping others.
